TRANSPORTATION - MECHANIC
Reports To and Evaluated By:
Supervisor of Transportation If the Supervisor of Transportation and Mechanic roles are filled by the same individual, then that individual will report to and be evaluated by the Superintendent or his/her designee.Responsibilities:
The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Provides maintenance and repairs for school system's buses and other vehicles Maintains the operational integrity of buses in order to pass state inspections. Maintains records for preparation of state and local reports as prescribed by law and district policy. Assists in the development of appropriate policies and procedures related to school transportation consistent with state and federal law and ALSDE regulations. Assists in ensuring that school bus safety inspections are conducted regularly and documented in accordance with state and federal law and ALSDE regulations. Assesses mechanical incidents for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation. Collaborates with the Supervisor of Transportation to request budget allocations, expenditures, fund balances and related financial activities, working collaboratively with the Superintendent and CSFO, for the purpose of maintaining an operational fleet of buses. Participates in meetings, conferences, and workshops for the purposes of professional growth and improved job performance. Proposes recommendations that may improve transportation service and efficiency. Assists in ensuring that the district bus fleet remains clean, safe, and in proper working condition. Maintains and up-to-date inventory of mechanic supplies and equipment in the transportation department. Transports students as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.Qualifications/Requirements:
(must be met within six months of employment) Must hold B (or above) CDL with a passenger endorsement and be insurable for vehicle operation or obtain license and endorsement within six months of employment; must hold a valid bus driver's certificate Must pass a school bus safety test administered by state transportation personnel within six months of employment. Thereafter, must be able to demonstrate, on a yearly basis, the ability to maintain the skill as well as the mental and physical capabilities to perform all tasks necessary to assure the safe maintenance of school buses Certified as a mechanic in the area of general bus maintenance in accordance with Alabama State Board of Education requirements within six months of employment Possess computer skills relevant to the position Ability to complete routine reports Knowledge automotive trade practices, tools, and equipment Must be willing to submit to drug testing prior to employment and be willing to enter into a random drug and alcohol testing program thereafter Must pass a school bus safety test administered by state transportation personnel within six months of employment. Thereafter, must be able to demonstrate to the state inspector, on a yearly basis, the ability to maintain the skill as well as the mental and physical capabilities to perform all tasks necessary to assure the safe maintenance of school buses Must be willing to submit to drug testing prior to employment and be willing to enter into a random drug and alcohol testing program thereafter At least one of the following: Certificate of completion of a certified auto mechanic's apprenticeship program Minimum of 3 years of verifiable experience as an auto or truck mechanic Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalentPHYSICAL DEMANDS

Compensation calculated from the Support Staff Salary Schedule 240 or 260 assignment days New hires with the district are required to attend a one day orientation. More than one position per category may become available and applicants may be considered for placement throughout the district based upon appropriate and current certification credentials.
