Bridge Inspectors perform critical public safety work by conducting inspections of on-system and off-system bridges in accordance with established standards and DOTD procedures. No prior bridge inspection experience is required— training is provided, with opportunities for career progression and advancement through the Bridge Inspector job series. This is a hands-on field role that requires attention to detail, safety awareness, and strong documentation skills. Work is performed in a variety of environments and may involve heights, water, traffic exposure, weather conditions, and travel to bridge locations within the assigned district. This position is located in Ouachita Parish , District 5/Unit 051. Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance. Job Duties:
Serve as lead inspector over a bridge inspection team and conduct in-depth inspections of new and existing on-system and Off-system bridges in an assigned area. Inspect and rate each bridge in accordance with current inspection procedures. Inspect both simple and complex timber, concrete, and steel bridges. Inspect steel truss bridges, movable bridges and culverts in accordance with current inspection procedures. Identify bridges with Fracture Critical Members, bridges requiring underwater inspection, and bridges that are scour critical. On bridges that are scoured critically, prepare a plan of action to monitor known and potential deficiencies and to address critical findings. Monitor bridges that are scour critical in accordance with current inspection procedures. Accompany underwater bridge inspection team to ensure that bridge requiring underwater inspection is inspected according to appropriate procedures. Inspect vehicles and marine damage to bridges and guardrails. Prepare bridge files and maintain reports on the results of bridge inspections, with notations of any action taken to address the findings of such inspections. Maintain relevant maintenance and inspection data to allow assessment of current bridge condition. Record the findings and results of bridge inspections on the appropriate forms. Conduct the Annual Off-System Bridge Program Compliance Review. Send all required bridge correspondence and bridge inspection reports to the appropriate bridge owners in the Off-System Bridge Program. Follow up on any critical findings and make reports in accordance to appropriate procedures. May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but no limited to, emergency/disaster support services.
