The basic purpose of this work is to perform professional engineering duties related to the inspection, design, rating, maintenance and repairs of tunnels, bridges, roadways, buildings, culvert and other related facilities. Duties and Responsibilities Conducts inspections of tunnels, bridges and other structures within the MHS to insure compliance with agency, state and federal guideline and standards. Reviews plans and specifications and monitors contractors' operations to ensure conformance to plans, specification and other contractual obligations. Works with all District sections through AWR process and coordinate all work efforts in D6 and tunnels to ensure safe traffic set-ups and police details for support. Writes and published the District six set up schedule. Recommends the assignments of responsibilities and shifts on large-scale projects that require multiple personnel and ensure that all phases of work have coverage. Provides recommendations for project improvements and solutions to resolve issues that may arise on projects. Inspects work in progress and completed work to ensure that correct construction procedures are being followed and that work conforms to plans, shop drawings and specifications. Inspect preparatory work such as grading before paving, steel reinforcement and interior clean-up of concrete forms, etc. to ensure conformance to plans and specifications. Provides timely information on assigned operations as needed by preparing daily reports on activities, including contractors' labor force, equipment location of work site, materials used, measurement of items for payment, weather, visitors and unusual occurrences. Measures unit items of work for payment purposes; prepares or assists in the preparation or review of pay estimates. Reports field problems and unacceptable work to Senior Inspector for resolution. Strictly enforces safety standards to protect the traffic and workers in the work zones and ensures that the Department and contractors' health and safety plan is adhered to. Coordinates the police details necessary to perform the work in a safe manner. Performs other related duties as required. This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus ("Signing Bonus") if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee's probationary period. Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in bridge and tunnel construction projects or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions I. An Associate's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline may be substituted for one year of the required experience. ll. A Bachelor's degree or higher in Civil Engineering or a related discipline may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must possess a valid Massachusetts Class D license. Applicants must possess and maintain a minimum of three of the following (verification required): NETTCP Hot Mix Asphalt Paving Technician Certification. NETTCP Concrete Inspector Certification. ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician. Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License. ATSSA Traffic Control Certification. NICET Level III Certification in an applicable discipline. Within one year of appointment successfully complete the following: FHWA Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges Certification (2-week class). FHWA Approved Tunnel Inspection Training Course.
