Job Description

This is a semi-skilled position in vehicular traffic control for electric and water systems. An incumbent is responsible for the calculation and placement of traffic control devices and barricades in accordance with "Manual on
Uniform Traffic Control Devices:
(MUTCD) standards and regulations. The employee is responsible for the safety of the public and the utility workers within the traffic control zone. Work is reviewed by a supervisor during progress and upon completion to ensure performance meets established standards. Flags at electric and water utility work sites in all types of weather. Controls the direction of traffic control patterns and places signs and barricades in compliance with MUTCD. Maintains tools, signs, and related equipment in serviceable condition. Operations traffic control trucks, generators, and trailer-mounted arrow boards. Performs vehicle inspection daily. May be required to participate in and/or facilitate training to support departmental or City initiatives and requirements. May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department. Position is designated as Mission Critical.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
When not performing traffic control responsibilities, the technician may perform other job duties, including, but not limited to, cleaning and reading water meters, performing general labor, painting fire hydrants, and servicing backflow preventers. High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED. Must be 18 years of age by the date of hire.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a valid telephone number. Must obtain traffic control certification within six months of employment.
KNOWLEDGE
Hand tools, portable generators, and related equipment. The occupational hazards associated with this type of work.
ABILITIES
Communicates on City radio. Maintains harmonious relationships with other employees and the public. Reads and uses maps and City directions. Operates various equipment associated with the work. Works with minimal direct supervision.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires work that involves climbing up/downstairs, bending, walking/standing for prolonged periods, twisting, and exerting up to 100 pounds of force regularly. Exposure to risks includes working hours both day/night, wet, humid, hot/cold, bright/dim light, traffic, heights, dust, and pollen. Requires normal visual acuity, field vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
