Job Description

Truck Scale Operator / Cashier Position Overview The Truck Scale Operator / Cashier is responsible for providing exceptional customer service while accurately processing incoming and outgoing scrap metal transactions. This position operates the truck scale, processes customer payments, maintains accurate transaction records, and supports daily yard operations. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, dependable, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. Key Responsibilities Greet customers and provide friendly, professional customer service. Explain the scrap metal buying process and answer questions regarding acceptable materials and pricing. Operate the truck scale and automated weighing system to accurately weigh incoming and outgoing loads. Identify and verify scrap metal types to ensure accurate pricing and inventory records. Calculate payments based on material type, weight, and current market pricing. Process customer transactions, including cash and check payments, and issue receipts. Process over-the-scale purchases and payments accurately. Retrieve and enter data into company software systems while maintaining accurate transaction records. Communicate with yard personnel regarding incoming and outgoing loads to ensure efficient operations. Answer incoming phone calls and assist customers with general inquiries. Monitor and maintain the radiation detection system according to company procedures. Maintain current knowledge of company procedures, industry practices, and applicable transportation and weight regulations. Assist with general office and administrative duties as assigned. Follow all company safety policies and procedures while maintaining a clean and organized work area. Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth daily operations and a positive customer experience. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation Must pass a pre-employment drug screening. Previous cash handling and customer service experience preferred. Personal computer proficiency and ability to learn company software systems. Strong mathematical and money-handling skills. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to remain calm under pressure and effectively de-escalate customer concerns when necessary. Knowledge of transportation regulations and weight determination is a plus; training will be provided. High level of integrity, honesty, and professionalism.
