Job Description
Jones Heavy Haul is seeking a reliable and safety-focused Pilot Car Driver to assist in the transportation of oversized and overweight loads. The Pilot Car Driver will escort permitted loads, help ensure compliance with state and local regulations, communicate with truck drivers and dispatch, and promote safe travel along designated routes. Duties and Responsibilities Escort oversized and overweight loads to designated destinations. Maintain constant communication with truck drivers using two-way radios and other communication devices. Monitor road conditions, traffic patterns, and potential hazards. Assist with route planning and identify potential obstacles such as low bridges, narrow roads, construction zones, and utility crossings. Place and remove warning signs, flags, and safety equipment as required. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local transportation regulations. Complete required trip reports and documentation accurately and timely. Conduct pre-trip inspections of pilot vehicle and equipment. Maintain a professional appearance and represent the company positively. Qualifications Valid California Driver's License with a clean driving record. Prior pilot car/escort vehicle experience preferred but not required. Ability to obtain or maintain required pilot car certifications. Strong communication and organizational skills. Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and occasional overnight travel. Ability to work independently and make sound safety decisions. Basic knowledge of transportation and traffic laws. Physical Requirements Ability to sit for extended periods while driving. Ability to lift minimum 75 pounds. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to safely enter and exit vehicles multiple times per day.
