General Definition of Work
The Transportation Vehicle Operator, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion driving a vehicle and providing safe, efficient, and on-time transportation for students to and from assigned schools daily. Employee performs district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Manager, Area Transportation.

Place of Work
The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.
Essential Functions
Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
Drive a student transport vehicle to transport students to and from assigned schools in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, policies, regulations, administrative codes, and transportation operation guidelines
Obey all traffic laws and observe all mandatory safety regulations for student transport vehicles including clearing the vehicle and evacuating students quickly in the event of an emergency
Enforce all policies and rules governing student conduct and maintain order in a fair and consistent manner; report non-compliant student behavior to the proper authority
Ensure students transported are limited to those authorized and appropriately assigned to the route
Ensure students exit the vehicle only at authorized school or drop off locations
Drives assigned route(s) in accordance with provided routing documentation, schedule, and timelines.
Identify changes impacting run directions and routes; report needed changes to the transportation department
Keep the student transport vehicle clean and free of any items which may present a safety problem
Perform pre- and post-route inspection of vehicle including, but not limited to, reporting mechanical defects, logging items left, reporting vandalism to the interior, ensuring all students have exited the vehicle by the end of the route, and securing all windows and doors to protect interior of the vehicle
Park the vehicle properly and maintain adequate fuel levels
Report any accidents to the transportation department
Establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with monitors, district personnel, school officials, and parents
Exercise responsible leadership when on school field trips
Safely operate a district fleet vehicle to travel to assigned job sites, ensuring compliance with all traffic laws and company driving policies
Maintain the vehicle in clean, orderly, and serviceable condition, promptly reporting any maintenance needs, damage, or safety concerns
Perform related work as assigned or required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Knowledge of county and school board policies, procedures, and standards
Knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of operating a student transport vehicle and safe driving practices
Ability to adhere to safety practices and to administer first aid as needed
Ability to read, interpret, and follow maps, route descriptions, and directions
Ability to operate district vehicles, fire extinguisher, two-way radio, and standard office equipment as well as wheelchairs, tie downs, child safety seats, lifts, and similar equipment if required by assignment
Ability to meet requirements physical standards prescribed by NC DMV
Ability to maintain safe driver standards and applicable physical and dexterity standards
Ability to learn assigned routes and students assigned
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records
Ability to reflect appropriate response to situations, while maintaining a professional and personal demeanor
Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business
Ability to take initiative and work independently
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment
Education and Experience
Must be at least 18 years of age
Clean driving record with at least six (6) months driving experience as a licensed operator of a motor vehicle and completion of or ability to complete NC's Enty-Level Driver Training (ELDT)
Possess a valid Class C driver's license issued by the NC DMV
First aid certification preferred
Equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements
Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and ability to provide own transportation to/from work
Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
