Job Description

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS
Oversees and actively participates in the day-to-day operations of the pool facility. Functions as a working foreman by supervising staff while performing frontline duties, including lifeguarding, maintenance oversight, and operational support. Ensures safe, efficient, and customer-focused operations at all times.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Directly supervises, schedules, and works alongside pool personnel, including lifeguards and support staff. Provides clear direction, sets expectations, and holds staff accountable for performance, conduct, and attendance. Leads by example by performing lifeguard duties and responding to emergencies as needed. Monitors and maintains pool chemical systems to ensure proper balance and compliance with health and safety standards. Oversees daily operations, including opening/closing procedures, staffing coverage, and customer service. Maintains accurate records of attendance, revenue, and deposits. Ensures facility cleanliness, including pool areas, locker rooms, restrooms, concessions, and office spaces. Addresses operational issues in real-time and makes sound decisions to maintain safe and efficient operations. Enforces facility rules, policies, and safety procedures consistently and professionally with both staff and the public. Documents performance concerns, policy violations, and incidents in a timely and accurate manner. Provides input into hiring decisions, including applicant evaluation and interview participation. Recommends corrective action, up to and including removal from schedule or termination, consistent with City policy and direction from supervision. Ensures prompt and reliable attendance.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists with onboarding, training, and coaching staff on safety procedures and expectations. Conducts routine inspections of the facility and equipment and reports or addresses maintenance needs. Assists with inventory control for supplies and chemicals. Completes other duties as assigned by the Parks and Recreation Department.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works in outdoor environments with exposure to extreme summer weather conditions. Regular exposure to water, humidity, and pool chemicals including chlorine and other cleaning agents. Work may involve prolonged standing, walking, and physical exertion.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (including CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid) or approved equivalent required at time of hire. Prior lifeguard experience required; demonstrated leadership, lead, or supervisory experience strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to lead, direct, and hold employees accountable in a team environment. Ability to supervise staff while actively performing operational duties in a fast-paced, public-facing environment. Working knowledge of pool operations, including water chemistry, safety protocols, and facility maintenance, or ability to learn quickly. Ability to enforce rules, policies, and safety standards consistently and professionally, including addressing non-compliance. Ability to respond effectively and calmly in emergency situations, including performing water rescues and administering first aid and CPR. Basic mathematical and cash-handling skills sufficient to manage daily receipts and maintain accurate records. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to give direction, provide feedback, and resolve conflict. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on operational needs. Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions. Reliable attendance and punctuality required. Ability to pass any required pre-employment screenings in accordance with City policy.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical ability to perform lifesaving functions, including swimming, lifting, and assisting patrons in distress. (P) Ability to supervise staff while actively engaged in operational duties. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or approved equivalent required. Prior experience in aquatic operations with leadership responsibilities preferred.
