Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS
The JROTC Army Instructor must meet all eligibility requirements established by the appropriate branch of the United States Armed Forces for Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) instructors and maintain current certification throughout employment. The position requires successful completion of all background checks as required by the school division and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with high school students, school administrators, faculty, parents, and community partners. Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and mentoring skills are required. Knowledge of adolescent development, classroom management, and instructional practices is preferred. The instructor must be able to model professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct consistent with both military and school division standards.
DESCRIPTION
The JROTC Army Instructor (AI) assists the Senior Army Instructor (SAI) in delivering the U.S. Army's JROTC curriculum within an accredited Virginia high school. Operating in a supporting instructor capacity, the Army Instructor participates in planning, delivering, and managing the high school's JROTC program in accordance with U.S. Department of Defense regulations, service-specific JROTC directives, school board policies, and district procedures. The JROTC Army instructor provides leadership and instruction that promotes citizenship, character development, leadership skills, personal responsibility, and academic achievement. The JROTC Army Instructor supports the overall mission of the school by fostering a positive, inclusive learning environment and by encouraging student engagement, discipline, and respect.
GENERAL DUTIES
(May not include all duties performed) Deliver daily JROTC classroom instruction in leadership, citizenship, civics, first aid, physical fitness, and map reading/land navigation aligned with the Army JROTC Learning for Life curriculum. Assist the SAI in planning, sequencing, and updating lesson plans and unit assessments. Maintain an orderly, disciplined, and respectful classroom environment consistent with Army values and school policy. Evaluate cadet performance through written assessments, practical exercises, and observable leadership demonstrations. Mentor and coach cadets in developing personal leadership skills, accountability, and team cohesion. Support the Cadet Chain of Command in planning and executing battalion events, ceremonies, and training activities. Facilitate physical training (PT) activities in accordance with school wellness and safety guidelines. Guide cadets in setting academic, personal fitness, and career/postsecondary goals. Assist the SAI in managing JROTC uniforms, equipment, and government property in accordance with Army regulations and school division policy. Maintain accurate cadet records, enrollment data, and program documentation required by Army Cadet Command and the school division. Support preparation of required program reports and unit self-assessments. Assist with program inspections, evaluations, and accreditation processes conducted by Army Cadet Command. Support and supervise co-curricular activities including drill team, color guard, Raider team, academic bowl, and community service projects. Accompany and supervise cadets during field trips, competitions, and off-campus JROTC events. Represent the JROTC program at school events, parent nights, and community functions. Collaborate with school counselors, teachers, and administrators to support cadet academic success.
SUPERVISION
The JROTC Instructor works under the general supervision of the Senior Army Instructor and School Principal or designee and receives programmatic guidance from the Senior Army Instructor and appropriate military service branch JROTC headquarters.
WORK CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a classroom, gymnasium, outdoor training areas, and community settings. The position may require standing, walking, physical activity, and the ability to demonstrate drills and exercises. Duties may include evening or weekend hours for extracurricular activities, competitions, ceremonies, and community events. The instructor may be required to travel locally or regionally in support of JROTC activities. Work is conducted in accordance with school division calendars and program schedules.
