VETERINARY TECHNICIAN
Summary of position: The registered veterinary technician (RVT) plays a vital role in providing quality medical care to the patients at the hospital. Their purpose is to facilitate productivity and efficiency. Their assistance allows the veterinarian to focus on diagnosis and treatment of the patients. They strive to create a pleasant and professional environment for the staff and clients at the hospital.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Exam room responsibilities: Welcomes client into exam room and takes a thorough history of patient, including reason for visit. Obtains temperature, pulse, and respiration of patient. Obtains samples (blood, feces, ear swab, etc) for patient testing. Discusses routine maintenance topics with client (vaccinations, heartworm prevention, flea prevention, deworming, ear cleaning, toenail trimming, teeth brushing, etc.). Explains vaccination schedule and preventive medicine to clients with new puppies/kittens. Answers questions about basic obedience, house training, and refers to the puppy/kitten information pack for further client information. Assists other technicians, assistants, and the veterinarian during the examination. Performs toenail trims, ear cleaning, and other medical grooming needs. Fills medications prescribed by veterinarian. Explains medications prescribed to patient. The RVT should be familiar with medications that are available for refills and at what intervals blood testing needs to be done for patients to receive refills. Keeps examination rooms clean and professional in appearance. Assists with creating and explaining estimates for clients.
Laboratory/Radiology duties:
Obtains samples for testing (blood, feces, ear swab, etc) and runs appropriate tests on samples. Prepares samples and fills out appropriate forms for samples going to an outside laboratory. Takes and assists others in taking quality radiographs. Practices and ensures others are practicing radiation safety while taking radiographs.
Surgical duties:
Induces anesthesia with the assistance of the veterinarian. Prepares (clips and scrubs) patients for surgical procedures. Prepares surgical suite for surgery and cleans surgical suite after surgery. Assists doctor and monitors patient during surgical procedure. Performs dental procedures with prophylactic scaling machine.
Emergency and Hospitalized patient care:
Triages emergency patients and assists with emergency protocols. The RVT is expected to handle emergencies in a calm, professional manner. Other employees are directed to assist the RVT during emergencies and the RVT must be prepared to take an authoritative role if the veterinarian is unavailable during the emergency. Administers intravenous catheters and monitors fluid/medicine administration during hospitalization. Monitors progress of hospitalized patients and informs veterinarian of progress or change in status. Cleans patients and cages patients are in as needed. Verifies that all patients and their cages are correctly identified.
Record keeping:
Updates patient records with medical information and client communications. Assists with documenting inventory needed for hospital, inventory coming into hospital, and inventory leaving hospital. Maintains controlled substance log.
Client communications:
Understands and has knowledge of hospital cases in order to update clients if the veterinarian is unavailable. Answers client technical questions over the phone. Triages patients over the phone to determine emergency situations.
General responsibilities:
Assists veterinarians, other technicians, assistants, and receptionists with tasks that will increase the productivity of the hospital. Cleans work area as needed and at the end of the work day; including, assisting with general office cleaning, cleaning dirty cages, cleaning treatment/surgical areas, floors, equipment, and counter tops. Participates in training of new staff members. Including training individuals prior to termination of employment. Informs veterinarian of procedures, tests, and medical information that RVT does not have knowledge of to increase knowledge base and increase the productivity of the hospital.
