WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An incumbent in this position is responsible for the efficient maintenance and operation of a Wastewater Treatment Plant. The work is performed under the general supervision of either a higher level operator qualified to be in charge of the plant or a higher level administrator. This position may oversee the work of subordinate staff in the performance of their assigned duties. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Operates, inspects, maintains and repairs pumps, motors, compressors, valves, screens, filters and other related mechanical and electrical equipment at a wastewater treatment plant; Performs laboratory and field tests on samples to determine treatment plant effectiveness and efficiency; Records readings from meters and gauges; Cleans channels, screens, tanks and other related equipment; Preparation and maintains of activity records and reports; Performs custodial duties in connection with the maintenance of the treatment plant's buildings and grounds; Performs duties of increasing responsibility as assigned in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principles and procedures of the maintenance and operation of a wastewater treatment plant; Working knowledge of the elementary principles of chemistry and general science as related to a wastewater treatment plant; Skill in the operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, valves, and other related mechanical and electrical equipment; Ability to read, understand and record data from meters and gauges; Ability to make routine laboratory and field tests of treatment plant samples; Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and successful completion of the required wastewater treatment operator course.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT

Possession of the required certificate as issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, 6NYCRR Part 650.11, appropriate to the plant.

NOTE:

Incumbents in this position may be required to be on call/respond to emergencies on weekends, evenings and holidays.
