Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Water/Wastewater Department Laborer I is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of all City potable water distribution and wastewater collection system and facilities. Duties include assisting in collection of water/wastewater samples, maintenance of swimming pool facilities, and animal control activities.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists in the operation and maintenance of the City's wastewater plant and well water production facilities Assists in the maintenance of the City's potable water distribution system Assists in the maintenance and operation of water/wastewater equipment Assists in the maintenance and operation of the City's water tower Assists in the animal control services for the City Assists in the maintenance of the municipal swimming pool Actively participates and abides by City sponsored education, training and safety programsADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Reads utility meters Assists with collection of water/waste samples Assists other departments as required Stays current on skills, keeping abreast of new technology, adapting to City and industry changes Attends and participates in City staff meetings, trainings, and seminars Responsible for performing other duties as deemed necessary or may be assigned This document in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position. No experience required, however, prefer at least one (1) year of similar experience and/or education. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the job satisfactorily in accordance with the adopted personnel policies of the City.Education:
A high school diploma or GED and a valid Kansas Driver's License are required. This position also requires an employee to obtain a valid Commercial Drivers License and Kansas State Certification in Water/Wastewater Operations within one (1) year of employment and maintain license. Position requires employee to take a minimum of ten hours of water/wastewater operation training every two years.Technical Skills:
A basic knowledge of mathematics and strong mechanical skills required. Employee must have ability to read, interpret and follow written and verbal directions.Problem Solving:
This position has limited problem solving responsibility, however, may encounter issues with finding breaks in water/wastewater system and facilities, equipment malfunctions, adverse weather, and handling citizen complaints.Decision Making:
This position has limited decision-making responsibility, however, may need to determine proper tools and equipment to use to fix equipment breakdowns and system failures.Supervision:
This position receives frequent supervision from the foreman and exercises no supervisory responsibilities.Financial Accountability:
Employee is directly responsible for department equipment, however, does not participate of the annual budget process.Personal Relations:
Daily contact with foreman, supervisor, co-workers and citizens is expected.Working Environment:
The laborer works approximately 60% of the time outdoors and is subject to adverse weather conditions. The other 40% of the work is conducted inside in the Plant facility. Exposure to confined spaces, chemicals, waste products, human blood/body fluids, extreme heat, loud noise, and heavy equipment is expected.Physical Demands:
Must have sufficient strength and dexterity to perform manual labor and safely operate vehicles, heavy equipment and tools are required. Employee is required to stand, bend, crawl, walk, lift and carry heavy loads during the course of a work day, as well as climb and run after stray animals. Employee must have ability to lift a minimum of 100 lbs.Work Hours :
Primary working hours are Monday through Friday 7:00am-4:00pm. Hours may vary depending upon department/City needs and adjustments are made to the schedule to accommodate these demands when necessary. The employee may be asked to work evenings, weekends, and holiday hours and subject to emergency call outs on short notice may occur.Job Type:
