THE CITY OF PORTALES, NEW MEXICO POSITION POSTING

POSITION:
LABORER, FULL-TIME DEPARTMENT
WATER STATUS:
NON-EXEMPT REPORTS TO
WATER
SUPERINTENDENT SHIFT
FT
REGULAR - 40 HOURS PER WEEK SALARY
$13.48 HOURLY/ $28,038.40 ANNUALLY •This is a safety-sensitive position, subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Utilities Superintendent or Foreman, the Laborer is responsible for the installation and maintenance of water and sewer lines throughout the city's utility system. Work also involves the operation and routine maintenance of dirt-moving and road equipment. A willingness to work in all weather conditions and irregular hours, weekends, and holidays as necessary is required.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Although the following are typical of the tasks and responsibilities routinely performed, additional tasks and /or responsibilities requiring comparable or lessor skills, knowledge, or dexterity may be assigned. 1. Proper and effective installation of water and sewer lines. 2. Make water taps and Inspect new sewer taps. 3. Dig ditches and/or trenches, spotting for the equipment operator. 4. Build and install/or raise manholes and water valves. 5. Repair or change out water meters and fire hydrants. 6. Fix water meter leaks, broken meter box rims, and clean out meter boxes. 7. Repair water and sewer main lines. 8. Perform some grounds and building maintenance. 9. Read and interpret water and wastewater maps. 10. Provide customer service and assistance as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS
1. High school graduate or equivalent or able to obtain within 6 months of employment. 2. Previous experience desired but not required. 3. Current New Mexico driver's license required with a satisfactory driving record. Class B CDL desired. 4. Ability to work with minimum supervision. 5. Ability to follow through on work assignments. 6. Physical Requirements:
Requires good eyesight, must be able to walk all day, and be able to lift meter lids continuously. Applicant must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must be able to perform physical labor for sustained periods of time with exposure to the elements. Requires constant physical efforts, and may be exposed to dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
1. Ability to work both inside and outside. 2. Ability to work in all types of weather; extreme cold temperatures, extreme heat temperatures and extreme wet/humid temperatures. 3. Ability to work with intermittent noise levels. Noise levels may be moderate to loud in work environment. 4. Ability to work with fumes, dust, odors and poor ventilation. 5. Ability to work in multiple surfaces; even, flat/hard, inclined/ramps, uneven, stairs, dry, wet, dust and natural ground. 6. Ability to work alone with or without directions.
WORK SCHEDULE
The regular work week is 40 hours - Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Additional time may be required to work after regular hours, on weekends, and holidays.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
1. Limited travel - ability to travel for meetings and training may be required. 2. Overnight travel may be required.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
1. Must pass a background investigation including work history, criminal records, driving records and other records deemed necessary. 2. Must pass a post-offer pre-employment drug screen administered by a City-designated facility.
CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT
1. Candidates must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and insurability in accordance with the City's insurance carrier. 2. Must complete and pass a physical given by a licensed practitioner to retain Commercial Driver's License. 3. Employees must maintain a source of communications for off duty work related communications. 4. Random drug and alcohol testing is a condition of employment. •Position has possibility of promotion based on performance and accomplishment of training goals•
