Job Description

Overview The curriculum at PenArt strikes a balance between traditional methods that have stood the test of time and innovative approaches of today. Our studio program includes workshops in all drawing and painting media, printmaking, photography, digital media, small metals, sculpture, ceramics, as well as interdisciplinary practices. We believe a finished piece is only one step in a student's artistic development. Our workshops, at all levels, encourage students to examine the materials at hand, experiment with various techniques, and exchange ideas. When the stresses of completing a perfect piece are set aside, we find students experience tremendous growth. PenArt's instructors include both studio artists and professional educators. Critical characteristics of instructors include an enthusiasm and passion for teaching, a can-do attitude, ability to facilitate a transformative art education experience for adult students of all levels and backgrounds, and expertise in the media and topic at hand. In addition to teaching experience, instructors must be active contributors to their field through participation in research, exhibitions, residencies, and conferences. Each year, about half of our instructors are returning and the other half are selected from recommendations, applications, and direct solicitation on our part.
Proposals Workshop proposals should include:
Description of the workshop, including concepts, objectives, and how it will be structured. Level of student. Whenever possible, we try to offer workshops that are open to all levels. Media, as well as any special equipment needed Teaching philosophy Your resume outlining your qualifications and teaching experience. Teaching an immersive workshop is very different than teaching a single class session or semester-long academic course. It is helpful for us to know all formats with which you have experience. Your website or at least 10 images of your work The names and contact information of two references who can speak to your teaching ability. Workshop proposals are accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed throughout the year. Once we receive your proposal, we will contact you if we need more information or have any questions. If a proposal is a good fit and a teaching slot is available, we will contact you. We schedule classes about a year and a half in advance.
