Job Description General Description:
Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) invites applications for qualified individuals to join its faculty in support of the mission and vision of the largest institution of higher education in Virginia. The primary responsibility of a faculty member at NOVA is to deliver high-quality, engaging instruction across classroom, laboratory, online, and clinical settings. Faculty prepare students for real-world success in Practical Nursing, Nurse Aide, and Medication Aide programs while fostering an inclusive and student-centered learning environment.- This position is eligible for telework after completion of state one-year probationary period.
- This position is restricted and is funded with non-continuous or non-recurring funding and is subject to continuation based on fiscal year funds and the needs of the College.
Duties and Tasks:
Practical Nursing Faculty are expected to maintain a full-time workload of 40 hours per week and deliver instruction through lecture, online modalities, skills laboratory, and clinical experiences. Responsibilities include collaborating with faculty on curriculum development and continuous program improvement; maintaining scheduled office hours; advising and supporting students; and building partnerships with healthcare providers to expand and coordinate clinical learning opportunities. Faculty also contribute to program planning and strategy, participate in accreditation activities, and ensure compliance with requirements set forth by the Virginia Board of Nursing. The Practical Nursing Faculty member provides instruction through classroom, laboratory, online, and clinical settings using effective and evidence-based teaching strategies. The role includes evaluating student performance, providing timely and constructive feedback, and supporting student success through advising and mentorship. Faculty collaborate with colleagues to design, implement, and continuously improve curriculum in alignment with industry standards and regulatory requirements. The position requires establishing and maintaining relationships with clinical partners, ensuring safe and effective student learning experiences, and contributing to program evaluation, accreditation, and compliance efforts, including those required by the Virginia Board of Nursing. Candidates must reside in the (DC, MD, VA) DMV area. Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.KSA's/Required Qualifications KSAs:
Knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and trends. Knowledge of current Virginia Board of Nursing curricular content. Knowledge of concept-based curriculum. Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodologies. Knowledge of program assessment principles. Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills appropriate for students, colleagues, staff, and administrator interactions as an individual or part of a team. Ability to work at all campus, site, and clinical locations. Ability to work daytime, evening, or weekends depending on cohort. Ability to assess student performance and progress and to provide appropriate feedback. Ability to promote higher-order thinking and problem-solving among educational participants. Ability to adhere to established standards for educational quality. Ability to maintain complete, accurate educational and/or clinical records. Have a passion for the discipline and a commitment to a student-centered philosophy in support of academic excellence for diverse groups of learnersRequired Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Nursing awarded by a regionally accredited institution. Active, unexpired Commonwealth of Virginia licensure as a registered nurse with no restrictions is required as a condition for hire and for continued employment if hired. If current licensure is with another state or is not active, then you must be able obtain or renew licensure with the Commonwealth of Virginia. A minimum of 2 years of full-time direct nursing care experience in the clinical setting. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalent. Demonstrated clinical competence in providing direct patient care across multiple patient populations and settings. Eligible for clinical practice in partner healthcare facilities. Candidates should possess sufficient technology skills to work productively in an organization that utilizes significant information and instructional technology resources. A thorough knowledge of Virginia Board of Nursing requirements for nursing programs and faculty is required. Additional Considerations Documented expertise in general medical-surgical or acute medical-surgical, long-term care and at least one specialty area including pediatrics, maternity, psychiatric nursing, and community-based nursing. Considerable experience teaching in nursing (lecture, lab & clinical) Experience with learning management systems and knowledge in curriculum development is strongly preferred. Experience with the systematic plan of evaluation for external regulatory and accreditation agencies preferred. Certified Nurse Educator (CNE or CNE-cl or CNEn).
