Job Description
Job Summary The Accountant I performs a variety of accounting, fiscal analysis, and auditing functions to support the preparation, maintenance, and review of County or department financial records. Working under general supervision, this role maintains ledgers and journals, reviews fiscal records for proper disbursement of funds, tracks grant and revenue data, prepares financial statements and reports, and assists with budget development and control. Responsibilities may include payroll support, cash account reconciliation, posting journal entries, problem-account resolution, contract administration, and coordination with other County departments and external auditors. The position may also support financial management, payroll, and property tax system functions depending on assignment. The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate has foundational knowledge of general accounting theory and government financial practices, along with familiarity with budgeting, auditing principles, and relevant laws and regulations. They bring strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to accurately perform varied financial and mathematical tasks. The ideal candidate is comfortable using spreadsheet, word processing, and database software and is eager to learn specialized County financial systems. They work well under pressure, can manage competing deadlines, and demonstrate consistently cooperative, professional behavior with colleagues, supervisors, and the public. A successful candidate will have at least one year of accounting or fiscal control experience and education equivalent to an associate degree in accounting, business, or economics (or qualifying equivalent experience). Department Summary The Auditor-Controller's Office, within the Finance Department, is responsible for delivering transparent, accurate, and compliant financial services that support Mono County's operations, residents, and public agencies. Core departmental functions include financial reporting, payroll administration, general accounting, property tax accounting and apportionment, accounts payable, treasury reconciliation, cost allocation, and compliance with state and federal reporting requirements. Staff work collaboratively to maintain the County's financial systems, uphold internal controls, and ensure fiscal integrity across all County funds, special districts, and mandated programs.
