Job Description

Heartland Independent Living Center (HILC) is seeking an experienced, compassionate, and visionary leader to serve as its next Executive Director. Heartland Independent Living Center is dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities to live independently with dignity, choice, and respect. Guided by the Independent Living philosophy, Heartland provides resources, advocacy, and services that promote independence, accessibility, and full participation in community life. The Executive Director serves as the organization's chief executive and administrative officer and is responsible for providing strategic leadership, overseeing daily operations, supervising staff, managing financial resources, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and funding requirements, supporting the Board of Directors, and advancing Heartland's mission throughout the communities we serve.

Strong experience in organizational leadership, budgeting, financial oversight, grants, contracts, and personnel management. Excellent communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills. Demonstrated ability to supervise staff, manage multiple priorities, and foster a positive workplace culture. Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, public administration, rehabilitation, business administration, social services, or a related field preferred. Equivalent executive leadership experience will be considered. Personal or professional experience with disability services, disability organizations, or the Independent Living movement is strongly preferred.

The successful candidate will be an ethical, collaborative leader who demonstrates integrity, sound judgment, accountability, and a genuine commitment to empowering people with disabilities. This individual will work closely with the Board of Directors, staff, consumers, community partners, and funding agencies to strengthen Heartland's programs and continue building a culture of excellence, accessibility, and consumer-directed services.
