Position:
The Billing Clerk plays a critical role in SDH's revenue cycle and supports mission-driven operations by ensuring accurate claim creation, daily claim submission, EOB posting, payment allocation, and timely follow-up. This position performs the day-to-day billing activities and works closely with the Billing Manager to ensure compliant, efficient, and timely billing practices. The Billing Clerk is also a key resource for staff questions related to billing workflows, payer rules, and documentation requirements.
Education/Experience/Licensure:
HS Diploma or GED required 3 years' experience with dental or medical billing required Knowledge of CDT/ADA codes required Knowledge of Medi-Cal Dental billing processes strongly preferred Experience with Open Dental and DentalxChange preferred. Successful completion of background checks required. Must follow all HIPAA and PHI handling standards. Fundamental duties include (but are not limited to):
- Review completed appointments daily and prepare accurate claims in Open Dental.
- Submit daily electronic and paper claims for Medi-Cal, HPSM, PPO, commercial plans, and sliding scale programs.
- Correct and resubmit rejected claims in DentalxChange.
- Post insurance payments and EOBs weekly; apply contractual adjustments and document payment details.
- Allocate all payments to the correct procedures and dates of service.
- Identify and document denials; resubmit or escalate issues to the Billing Manager/CEO.
- Assist with bi-weekly A/R reviews and work aging buckets as assigned.
- Maintain accurate notes, documentation, and uploads in Open Dental and SharePoint.
- Provide billing support to front office and clinical teams, including payer rules and documentation needs.
- Help prepare monthly patient statements and review balances for accuracy.
- Help with review and support processing of credit balances, prepayments, and refunds.
- Maintain HIPAA compliance and secure handling of PHI.
- Perform other billing-related duties as assigned. Fundamental Expectations of this position include (but are not limited to):

Physical Expectations:
Prolonged sitting or standing may be required. Those physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination normally associated with office tasks will be performed on a frequent, repetitive basis. The ability to distinguish letters and symbols as well as the ability to utilize telephones, computer terminals and copiers is required. Work under stressful conditions as well as irregular hours may be required. Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. is required, up to 50 lbs. is helpful, but rare in occurrence.
