Company Overview The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association (The Gables) in Salem, Massachusetts, is a nonprofitanization that owns and operates a National Historic Landmark Districtposed of six historic buildings, colonial revival gardens, and a rich and varied collection. The Gables seeks a part-time (up to 8 hours per week) collections assistant to support a variety of projects related to caring for the collection, including preventative cleaning, monthly Integrated Pest Management tasks, creating inventories, and assisting in other collections management projects. Training in basic collections handling and care will be provided. The part-time Collections Assistant will report to the Curator of Collections. Duties and Responsibilities- Conduct basic housekeeping in exhibit rooms and storage spaces
- Monthly IPM monitoring and documenting
- Update and create records in the collections management system Past Perfect
- Support other Collections projects related to interpretative strategies, inventories, research, re- housing, etc., at the direction of the Curator of Collections Learning Opportunities
- Gain an understanding of collections management in a museum setting.
- Experience the care of collections following museum best practices.
- Gain experience working on a collections management database (Past Perfect).
Qualifications:
Qualifications- Excellent interpersonal and oralmunication skills
- Detail-oriented
- Interest in history and museums
- Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public and other staff members.
- Accept supervision, work both independently and in a group, and be flexible to changing situations.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with Past Perfect or similar collections management systems a plus Working Conditions/Physical Demands
- Ability to work during site hours.
- Constant use of speech, hearing, and sight abilities.
- Ability to lift up to 30lbs to move/transport collections material, supplies and equipmen
