Range Science/ Plant Science Field Data Collection Assistant Zia Engineering & Environmental Consultants - 3.3 Las Cruces, NM Job Details Contract $25 - $30 an hour 6 days ago Benefits Flexible schedule Qualifications Plant identification Outdoor work Company vehicle operation Driver's License Bachelor's degree Soil science Full Job Description Zia Engineering & Environmental Consultants, LLC has a need to fill one position for a two-person team to collect range, pasture, and BLM lands data for natural resources inventories (NRI) for the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). NRI instructions for on-site data collection can be reviewed at: On-Site Data Collection Handbook of Instructions | NRI Grazing Land (iastate.edu) The period of performance is from May 2026 - September 2026 and will involve fieldwork during the summer heat. This position is New Mexico statewide; however, the primary team is located in Las Cruces, NM (origin of mobilization to field sites) The position is part-time/on-call as segment/point locations are obtained to inventory. Zia will provide vehicles for each team requiring applicants to have a valid driver's license for insurance requirements. Field duration depends on the location of the data collection sites and from the site of mobilization. Travel will include local day trips as well as overnight from one to 5 nights. Per Diem and lodging expenses are paid by Zia.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Range Management or a related discipline (preferred); or coursework with a combination of biological, physical or earth science with minimum 15 hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.
Experience:
Working knowledge of Range Science/Plant Science and Field data collection, including field experience in western states.
Knowledge:
Native plant identification, soil science, use of GPS equipment, field data recording instruments/ computers, compass, clinometers and other equipment is a plus. The applicant should have a working knowledge of the NRI grazing land field protocols and should be comfortable with outdoor field work. Applicant must have a valid driver's license and the ability to secure and maintain a government security clearance. Overnight travel will be required. The position will remain open until filled.
