Overview:
Job Summary The Part-Time Medical Biller ensures accurate billing, posting, and collections for a fast-paced ophthalmology practice. This role manages the full revenue cycle for comprehensive eye care, including cataract surgeries, lasers, cosmetic procedures, office visits, and diagnostic testing. The ideal candidate possesses specialized knowledge of ophthalmic coding, vision plans, and the practice tools ModMed, NextGen, and TriZetto.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Pre-Certifications:
Obtain prior authorizations for cataract surgeries, laser treatments, cosmetic procedures, and specialized diagnostic testing.
Surgical & Cosmetic Billing:
Code and submit claims for major surgeries (e.g., premium IOL cataracts), in-office lasers (e.g., YAG, SLT), and elective cosmetic procedures.
Office Visits & Testing:
Review and bill standard evaluation and management (E/M) codes, eye codes (920xx), and diagnostic tests (e.g., OCT, visual fields, biometry).
Payment Posting:
Accurately post insurance payments, electronic fund transfers (EFTs), adjustments, and patient balances across medical and elective categories.
Collections Management:
Manage patient balances, navigate self-pay/cosmetic fee collections, issue statements, and establish payment plans.
System Utilization:
Utilize ModMed (EMA) and NextGen systems daily for charge entry, claim generation, and patient account tracking.
Clearinghouse Management:
Transmit claims, resolve front-end rejections, and review electronic remittance advices (ERAs) using TriZetto.
Denial Management:
Review, correct, and appeal denied claims for complex surgical and testing lines item by item. Accounts Receivable (A/R): Work the insurance aging reports to maximize collection and eliminate outstanding balances.
Compliance:
Adhere strictly to HIPAA regulations regarding patient health and financial data.
Qualifications & Skills System Experience:
Required proficiency with ModMed, NextGen, and TriZetto clearinghouse software.
Ophthalmic Expertise:
Minimum 2 years of billing experience handling cataract surgeries, ophthalmic lasers, and diagnostic testing.
Cosmetic Billing Knowledge:
Familiarity with the distinct collection rules, self-pay structures, and non-covered service guidelines for cosmetic eye procedures.
Core Competencies:
Proven mastery of medical payment posting, patient collections, and the insurance pre-certification process.
Insurance Knowledge:
Deep understanding of Medicare local coverage determinations (LCDs), commercial medical plans, and major vision care networks.
Detail-Oriented:
High level of accuracy in alphanumeric data entry, math calculations, and surgical chart auditing.
