Job Description
Under general supervision performs legal work of considerable difficulty and complexity recording, transcribing, and documenting all types of court proceedings including but not limited to civil, criminal, and probate and processing and distributing documents and papers; performs other related work as assigned. (Illustrative Only)
- Attends all court hearings and determines, summarizes, and records the points and decision reached in the course of the proceedings
- Prepares multiple documents to carry out the judgment of the court
- Closes out criminal case files
- Prepares and submits Motor Vehicle Department abstracts and DPS disposition reports using computer applications
- Takes, transcribes, and dockets courtroom dictation, including orders from the court and stipulations and motions from counsel
- Summarizes court proceedings in minute entry form
- Creates, processes, and distributes official records of formal orders and other official and legal Documents at the direction of the Judge
- Maintains control of case files during Court hearings and assures files are available at the scheduled time
- Impanels grand jury and trial juries
- Keeps records of matters taken under advisement to assure judge's ruling within legally set time limitations
- Provides monthly re-cap of all under-advisements and statistics of hearings attended
- Updates Court and judges' calendars based on Court orders
- Coordinates calendars and schedules with Judicial Assistants
- Marks and maintains all submitted exhibits and assures exhibits are available at scheduled hearings;
- Certifies documents
- Enters and maintains data in automated case management systems
- Reads information or indictment preceding criminal trials
- Issues bench warrants
- Prepares and maintains files
- Assists in the training of court technicians
- Performs other duties as assigned Essential functions of this position include: sitting in court or at desk for shorthand, data entry, transcription and taking dictation; working with and around other court staff, clerk's staff, attorneys, defendants and the public; dealing with interruptions from co-workers, phones and unscheduled hearings; repetitive motion hand / wrist for data entry and transcription; vision acuity (near / far) for computer and courtroom work; Hearing for courtroom testimony, etc.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to type 50 words per minute and take dictation at 60 words per minute and/or have experience with digital recording equipment. Must successfully pass background investigation, including fingerprint clearance. May be assigned to an alternate work schedule which includes evenings. The ideal candidate has previous judicial branch, legal or justice system experience, using specialized case management tools like AJACS, Word templates, and creating meeting summaries. They have a typing speed over 80 wpm with high accuracy, and proficiency with spelling legal terminology in English. This position is non-exempt from overtime.Please Note:
Applicant can be hired as aCourt Technician I Minimum Qualifications:
Two years experience in a business environment or training in business procedures; must have keyboarding skills of 50 words per minute and take dictation (by shorthand or speed writing) at 60 words per minute and/or have experience with digital recording equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.Minimum Salary:
$49,625.00 You will have one year to meet the Minimum Qualifications of the Court Technician II- Considerable knowledge of:
- Court and legal terminology and procedures
- Modern office practices, procedures and equipment
- Procedures, guidelines and statutory requirements that govern the duties of courtroom clerks
- Working knowledge of:
- Legal terminology and business English
- Arizona statutes and Rules of Procedure
- Computer applications
- Skill in:
- Use of modern office equipment
- Taking and transcribing dictation
- Ability to:
- Make sound decisions in accordance with regulations, policies and procedures
- Maintain confidentiality of court matters
- Perform complex paperwork processing and calendaring tasks with speed and accuracy in a courtroom environment
- Meet deadlines and maintain workflow
- Type accurately
- Accurately maintain records and prepare reports
- Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public
