This is a hands-on management position for an experienced ophthalmology billing professional who enjoys leading employees, solving reimbursement problems and staying close to daily operations. It is not a corporate director, executive or consulting position. Our priority is to build a stable, accountable and thoroughly cross-trained billing department. The successful candidate will provide employees with consistent daily direction, establish dependable workflows and personally assist with difficult claims, denials and payer issues. What You Will Do
- Direct the daily work of the billing and revenue-cycle team.
- Establish priorities and ensure assigned work is completed accurately and on time. Train, coach and cross-train employees.
- Develop clear written procedures and backup coverage for essential functions.
- Monitor charge entry, claim submission, payment posting, denials, appeals and accounts receivable.
- Assist staff with difficult claims and payer escalations Identify recurring denials, underpayments and workflow breakdowns.
- Monitor insurance accounts receivable, particularly balances over 90 and 120 days.
- Oversee billing and reimbursement for diagnostic testing, intravitreal injections and high-cost retinal medications.
- Help reconcile medication administration, documentation, authorization and billing records.
- Track meaningful performance indicators and communicate results to the Practice Administrator.
- Work collaboratively with physicians, clinical personnel, front-office employees and practice leadership. What We Are Looking For At least five years of medical billing or revenue-cycle experience.
- Direct retina or ophthalmology billing experience is required.
- Demonstrated understanding of ophthalmology claims, denials, coding and payer requirements.
- Previous experience supervising, training or directing billing employees.
- Hands-on experience managing insurance accounts receivable and claim appeals.
- Working knowledge of Medicare and commercial-payer billing.
- Strong employee-leadership, organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to hold employees accountable while maintaining a professional and supportive work environment.
- Willingness to work onsite in Wilmington.
Highly Desirable Seven to ten years in retina or ophthalmology billing and experience with ModMed EMA and Practice Management systems. Knowledge of intravitreal drug billing, HCPCS/J-codes, units, prior authorization and buy-and-bill reimbursement. CPC, CPB, CRCR, CMRS or similar certification. Experience developing SOPs and employee cross-training programs.
