Caltrans carries out its mission of providing a safe, sustainable, integrated, and efficient transportation system to enhance California's economy and livability, with six primary programs: Aeronautics, Highway Transportation, Mass Transportation, Transportation Planning, Administration, and the Equipment Service Center. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire two (2) student assistants, in a learning capacity, under close supervision by an Area Construction Engineer (ACE) in District 10 Construction/Senior Transportation Engineer (STE). In a learning capacity, the student assistants will assist in a wide range of assignments within the unit related to the Construction. The student assistants will be working in the Lodi Construction Office. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. 16 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Must possess the ability to apply engineering classroom instructions to work situations. Must possess the ability to learn procedures and methods and work well with others in a team environment. Must possess the ability to satisfactorily carry out assignments. Must possess the ability to do neat and accurate work and follow instructions completely. Must possess knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, and Adobe Acrobat processing software. Preferred Qualifications Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking. Knowledge of MicroStation and Civil 3D AUTOCAD software are optional. Duties and Responsibilities In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist Area Construction Engineer in preparing fact summary sheets on Project Records and Reports for construction project, assist with Resident Engineer (RE)/Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE)/Office Engineer (OE) in checking shop drawings, construction submittals, calculation for bid item quantity sheet, Extra Work Bill Report, lane closure request, COZEEP request, log sheets for submittal/RFI/Change Order, WPCP/SWPPP Reports, WSWD Report, Change Order Backup Calculation, preparing portion of As-built as related to contract administration during all phases of roadway construction activity on the project. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist with the engineering inspections, ensure compliance with plans and specifications, monitor contractor's work and progress, measures and records pay quantities. The student assistant will assist in performing engineering calculations, project schedules, review project documents, calculate quantities, draft letters for utility companies and responses to the correspondence from internal/external stakeholders. Duties will include assisting with preparing daily reports of work including documenting conversation and other items that affect the work. The student assistant will also learn to follow the Construction Manual guidelines. Also, the student assistant will assist in making recommendations and be required to seek the approval of the Resident Engineer or licensed engineer in responsible charge. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in with drafting and engineering necessary in revising contract plans under the direction of the ACE/STE or Resident Engineer or licensed engineer in responsible charge. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist the Office Engineer in inputting and filing data, filling paperwork in the project files, and monitoring data. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in performing administrative or technical duties. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office or in a field environment. Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain.
