Postal Clerk I The University of Southern Mississippi is currently accepting applications for the position of Postal Clerk I. Position Details Location Hattiesburg 118 College Drive Hattiesburg, Mississippi, 39406-0001 United States Division Post Office Position Type Staff Employment Status Full Time Grant Funded No Salary Range 11.88 - 12.31 Pay Grade N02 Posting Close Date Open Until Filled Special Instructions to Applicants Must be able to catch on quickly-multitasking. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without the need for visa sponsorship. The University will not sponsor applicants for work visas (e.g., H-1B). Job Summary The Postal Clerk I support daily postal operations within the USPS Contract Station by providing customer service and processing postal transactions using a point-of-sale (POS) system, including the sale of stamps, processing of money orders, and distribution of packages. The position is responsible for sorting and delivering campus mail to departmental and student mailboxes throughout the day, as well as performing all duties associated with the contract window, including scanning packages, preparing daily deposits, and maintaining accurate records. This role ensures accountability, accuracy, and compliance with USPS and University standards while performing related duties as assigned to support efficient mail operations. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Accepts and sorts incoming and outgoing mail. Sells postage stamps and money orders at the contract window and completes daily USPS reports and deposits. Applies postage and charges outgoing mail to university departments. Manages student post office box rentals and closures each semester. Assists with USPS audits, returns, and inventory ordering. Provides customer service to faculty, staff, students, and community members regarding mail and package pickup. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Proficiency in Microsoft Office Strong organizational skills with the ability to be self-motivated and work independently with minimal supervision. Must be willing to follow all postal regulations when accepting and mailing packages. Must have a valid driver's license to operate a university vehicle. Must have a cell phone to communicate with students via call or text regarding package notifications. Preferred Qualifications Experience in handling cash transactions and working with a point-of-sale (POS) system, including the ability to accurately balance a cash drawer daily. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet software is also preferred for tracking transactions, records, and operational data.
