Job Description
Job Summary Sorters are the reason freight gets to the right dock instead of sitting in a corner all week. You'll work along the conveyor and the staging floor, scanning packages and moving them into the lanes they belong in. It's steady work. Volume typically spikes right after the inbound trucks unload, and for a couple of hours you'll be reading labels quickly and keeping the line clear so nothing backs up behind you. We run a few different shifts and the crew tends to stay pretty consistent. You'll learn the zone map in your first week, it isn't as complicated as it looks on the wall. Responsibilities Scanning packages as they come off the belt. Sort freight into the correct lane, zone, or cart. Pulling anything damaged off the line and setting it aside for a supervisor to look at. Stacking cartons on pallets so they don't tip. Boxes with unreadable labels get set in the exception area, and someone on days will usually track down where they were supposed to go. Shrink-wrap completed pallets before they head to the dock. Sweeping the belt area at the end of the shift. Qualifications Labels blur together after a while, so you're the kind of person who still catches a zip code that's one digit off. You can stay on your feet through a full shift and lift boxes in the fifty-pound range without much trouble. When the belt speeds up, you get faster instead of getting flustered. Reading and following written instructions in English comes easily to you, since most of our routing signage depends on it. Being reliable about your start time matters, because one empty spot on the line slows everyone down. If someone next to you is buried under a surge, you shift over and help clear it. You're open to being moved to a different zone when the volume calls for it.
