Job Description
This position will be located at the safety campus in Middletown. Adult Probation Officer II Training Coordinator Responsibilities Officer Safety Instructor Duties/Responsibilities Seeking a qualified candidate who will be responsible for assisting with the coordination, development, and training of officer field safety training for the JBCSSD Training Academy's Officer Safety Unit.
The successful candidate will:
Develop, facilitate, and coordinate officer safety trainings Train staff in safety systems including classroom/lecture and practical physical training Evaluate trainings and assess trainee's competency via physical practical skills demonstrations Development and implementation of training curriculum Obtain and maintain all necessary trainer certifications Present at Training Advisory Committee meetings (TACs) Be versed in discipline specific policies related to officer safety Qualified candidate will possess: Considerable knowledge of policy and procedures related to officer safety Demonstrated ability to participate in all aspects of officer safety training curriculum Ability to develop and facilitate training to a diverse group of JBCSSD staff Proficient technical skills in MS Office applications, with considerable knowledge of PowerPoint Ability to manage projects Ability to communicate accurately and effectively in written and verbal form A valid motor vehicle operator's license for required business-use travel statewide via the candidate's own car, or a State-owned car if availableDIVISION
Adult ProbationCLASS DEFINITION
This class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks involved in conducting presentence investigations of referred cases and for overseeing individuals referred by the court for supervision.SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a Chief Probation Officer or other employee of higher grade.SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead/supervise lower level employees and interns/volunteers as assigned.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Conducts a full range of investigations of all cases referred by the court including but not limited to presentence investigations, youthful offender eligibility investigations, alternative sentencing assessments and intensive supervision investigations; coordinates cases referred for drug and alcohol evaluations; assesses offenders and makes recommendations for alternative sanctions; recommends sentencing plans; furnishes probationers with written probation conditions and policies; conducts office and home visits to keep informed of probationers' conduct and condition; uses all suitable methods to aid and encourage probationers to improve their conduct and condition; assesses client needs for risk potential and appropriate level of community supervision; supervises client status and condition on a continuous basis and monitors clients' compliance with court orders; counsels clients where applicable; enters and maintains data in the automated information system; interprets data to facilitate interagency automated systems integration; reviews criminal records for accuracy and interprets same; receives and responds to public inquiries within agency policies; appropriately refers to probationers to treatment facilities and maintains contact with facilities to ensure probationers' compliance; may oversee specific caseloads; maintains liaison with court personnel, community groups and service organizations, state agencies and law enforcement organizations; prepares probation violations, modifications and terminations and attends and testifies at court hearings as required; prepares and serves warrants and show cause orders; may transport clients; may speak before professional and lay groups; assists in the hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of new staff; interviews victims of crime to assess and determine amount of loss and impact; ensures the accurate collection and disbursement of money in accordance with court orders; maintains case records and statistics and prepares special reports as assigned; exercises independent judgment of Violation of Probation matters; may track, surveil, and arrest clients; may collect urine samples from clients; interprets urine sample results and maintains appropriate security measures over samples; supervises Interstate Compact cases; may act for supervisor in his/her absence; may be assigned a duty station in a special Alternative Incarceration Unit (AIU) of the Department of Correction and perform related tasks such as: coordinate and facilitate the admission and release of clients to and from the AIU as a member of the professional staff while performing duties illustrated above, prepare prerelease plans for clients in conjunction with AIU staff and field supervising Probation Officers; performs related duties as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY
Considerable knowledge of criminal behavior; considerable knowledge of psychology; considerable knowledge of social, cultural, economic, psychological and legal issues influencing the attitudes and behaviors of clients and their families; considerable knowledge of relevant state and federal laws; considerable knowledge of relevant agency policies and procedures; considerable knowledge of new technologies and current trends in supervising clients; considerable knowledge of community agencies and programs; considerable knowledge of proper transportation techniques for clients in custody; considerable knowledge of automated information systems; knowledge of agency training procedures and agency performance appraisal system; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; considerable interviewing and counseling skills; considerable ability to assess client needs, risks and substance abuse behavior; considerable ability to relate to different cultural and economic backgrounds; some supervisory ability.EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
General Experience:
A Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience conducting presentence investigations of referred cases and overseeing clients referred by the court for supervision.Substitutions Allowed:
1) A Master's degree in the social sciences or a related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience. 2) Two (2) years of experience at or above the level of Adult Probation Officer I may be substituted for the General Experience.SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Incumbents are required to have a valid Connecticut motor vehicle operator's license and a motor vehicle available for daily use.WORKING CONDITIONS
