Job Description
Adventure & High Ropes Specialist Camp Courageous - Monticello, IA Camp Courageous is seeking an energetic, safety-minded, and compassionate Adventure & High Ropes Specialist to join our program team. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys outdoor adventure programming, ropes courses, climbing, and creating inclusive, confidence-building experiences for campers of all abilities. If you have experience with high ropes, low ropes, belaying, climbing, outdoor recreation, or adaptive recreation — and want meaningful work that positively impacts others — we'd love to hear from you. Position Overview The Adventure & High Ropes Specialist is responsible for planning, leading, and supervising adventure-based activities, including high ropes, low ropes, climbing, and other outdoor recreation experiences. This role works closely with the Program Director and camp staff to provide safe, engaging, and inclusive programming for campers with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. Safety is the top priority in all activities while helping campers build confidence, teamwork, independence, and problem-solving skills. Responsibilities Lead and supervise high ropes, low ropes, climbing, and adventure activities Safely belay and monitor campers during adventure programming Develop engaging activities tailored to campers' age and ability levels Maintain safety standards and follow all camp policies and procedures Assist campers in building confidence, teamwork, and independence Organize and maintain adventure equipment and supplies Report equipment repair or replacement needs Collaborate with counselors and program staff to coordinate schedules and activities Participate in staff meetings, orientation, evening programs, and special camp events Assist with camper support and general camp responsibilities as needed Maintain posted activity schedules and assist with overall adventure program organization Qualifications Must be 18 years of age or older Genuine interest in working with individuals with disabilities Experience in ropes courses, climbing, outdoor recreation, or adventure programming Strong communication, leadership, and teamwork skills Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions Ability to stand for extended periods, walk long distances, and lift/carry at least 50 lbs. Current CPR and First Aid certifications preferred, or can be completed through Camp Courageous within 30 days of hire ACCT, belay, climbing, or challenge course certifications preferred Previous experience with adaptive recreation or camp programming is a plus Willingness to complete Iowa Medication Manager certification and mandatory reporter training
Preferred Experience:
Dynamic Belay/ Rock Climbing Facilitation Experience Low Ropes Facilitation Experience ACCT Level 1 preferred Adaptive climbing experience preferred, not required. Why Camp Courageous?
