- Full-time, Contract Overview The Conservation Officer is responsible for protecting, preserving, and enhancing the natural, cultural, and recreational resources of the Ewinally Property while providing public safety and law enforcement services in accordance with applicable tribal, federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and ordinances.
Serving as a steward of the land and a guardian of public safety, the Conservation Officer works to ensure the responsible use and protection of the property's natural resources, including land, air, water, wildlife, and culturally significant areas. This position involves patrolling the property, enforcing environmental and public safety regulations, investigating violations, issuing warnings and citations, and coordinating with tribal departments, neighboring law enforcement agencies, and regulatory partners. The Conservation Officer also promotes conservation awareness, environmental stewardship, and community engagement through education and outreach efforts. Duties Enforce applicable tribal, federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, regulations, and policies related to environmental conservation, natural and cultural resource protection, wildlife management, recreation, and public safety. Patrol the Ewinally Property and other designated lands to monitor resource conditions, deter unlawful activities, and ensure compliance with conservation and public safety requirements. Respond to complaints, incidents, and reported violations; investigate alleged offenses, interview witnesses, gather evidence, determine applicable violations, and take appropriate enforcement action. Issue warnings, citations, notices of violation, and other enforcement actions as authorized. Prepare cases for legal proceedings and provide testimony or court appearances when required. Protect and preserve natural resources, including land, air, water, wildlife, fisheries, forests, habitats, and culturally significant sites from damage, misuse, unauthorized access, or illegal exploitation. Maintain accurate and complete records of patrols, investigations, inspections, citations, incidents, evidence, and enforcement activities using established records management systems and reporting procedures. Maintain chain-of-custody documentation and secure handling of evidence, seized property, and confiscated items in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and data privacy requirements. Prepare and submit regular activity reports to the Executive Director of Programs and Services detailing patrol activities, contacts, citations, investigations, seizures, resource concerns, and ongoing conservation initiatives. Collaborate with tribal departments, neighboring law enforcement agencies, regulatory agencies, emergency responders, and community organizations to support conservation, resource management, and public safety objectives. Respond to environmental emergencies, natural disasters, wildfires, pollution incidents, wildlife emergencies, and other resource-related events, coordinating mitigation and response efforts as needed. Conduct surveillance, monitoring, inspections, and other field activities to identify and address threats to natural, cultural, and recreational resources. Assist with wildlife management, habitat restoration, environmental monitoring, conservation planning, and implementation of resource protection initiatives and programs. Develop, present, and participate in educational programs, community outreach efforts, and public awareness campaigns that promote environmental stewardship, conservation practices, responsible recreation, and compliance with tribal regulations. Research, develop, and recommend new conservation programs, policies, and initiatives that support the long-term protection and sustainability of the Ewinally Property. Safely operate vehicles, ATVs, communications equipment, and other tools necessary to perform patrol, enforcement, emergency response, and conservation duties. Maintain required certifications and complete all mandated training, continuing education, and professional development necessary to perform assigned duties effectively. Provide support and assistance to tribal law enforcement personnel during emergencies, special events, investigations, or other situations requiring coordinated response. Ensure compliance with all established safety standards, operational procedures, and departmental policies. Perform other duties as assigned in support of the protection, preservation, and stewardship of the Ewinally Property and its natural, cultural, and recreational resources. Only operate company vehicles if, once trained, and directed to do so. Leads by setting a positive example to all tribal members, employees and/or guests. Will be held accountable, to a high degree, for the accuracy and thoroughness of departmental responsibilities and procedures. Will always interact with tribal members, employees and/or guests in a positive, professional manner. Promptly, accurately follows instructions received from department supervisor. Correctly follow and abide by all Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel Policies and Procedures.
