PRIMARY FUNCTION
Work as part of a team to help maintain trees, shrubs, vines and ground cover according to their natural shapes. Participate in the Turf Care program which includes mowing, edging, blowing sidewalks, fertilizing, and weed control. A Specialist is expected to share the responsibility for the appearance and health of the entire 120-campus using sound horticultural techniques. Also included in this position is the expectation that the person in this job will: Uphold and put into daily practice the values of Carol Woods. Support the well-being and quality of life of every individual resident. Function as a good steward of resident resources. Contribute to Carol Woods approach to continual quality improvement. Support the concepts of a learning organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Plants and cultivates trees, grass, flowers, and shrubs. Prepares ground for planting and maintains mulch beds and planting areas as needed. Shared responsibility for maintenance & operation of large equipment such as dump trucks, skid steer, & excavator. Removes weeds, blows, rakes, and removes trash and debris from walkways, culverts, stairways, roadways, planters, and parking. Maintains in-ground drains and culverts. Safely operates all ground equipment. Participate in the Turf Care Program. Includes proficiently operating all mowers, weed eaters, edgers, blowers, and vacuums. Work to help the team during the leaf removal season operating blowers, vacuums, and leaf loader truck. Shares the responsibility of performing gardening tasks for residents. Participates in the Private Duty Gardening Service. Takes part in the Trash Pickup Service on specific days from the garden apartments and the Departments Recycling Program from other given areas. Works with the team to maintain inventory of plants on campus. Upon gaining NC Pesticide License, shares in the responsibility of applying Pesticides around campus. Shares in the responsibilities of renovations of landscapes. Assist & supports Landscape Specialist II Assist in maintaining proper drainage on campus. Assist in carrying out landscape projects. Responsible for snow removal and clean up during other inclement weather. Assist in the upkeep and maintenance of all Grounds Equipment. Assists with maintenance, repair, replacement and upgrading of irrigation components such as but not limited to sprinkler heads and lines. Digs trenches, unloads, and relocates materials, and cleans tools and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
Requirements:
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent. Degree and/or special training/experience in Horticulture or Turf Management is preferred. Valid North Carolina Driver's License.

Will attain Pesticide Applicators License within 1 year of hire.
Experience:
Knowledge of machinery and equipment used in the Grounds Department.
Physical:
Ability to push, lift and carry heavy objects, sometimes exceeding 50 pounds. Ability to withstand considerable standing, walking, and working in extreme hot, humid, and cold weather conditions. Ability to think ahead and problem solve. Excellent organizational skills.
Working Conditions:
Will work in outside areas (120 acres) in all types of weather. May be required to return to facility under certain situations.
