Job Description

Please read through the description and see the application instructions below Position Details
  • Full time (30-50 hours/week), year-round
  • $20-25/hr to start with scheduled pay increases
  • Flexible start date
  • applications accepted on a rolling basis through 2026 About the Farm Clem's Organic Gardens grows 8 acres of certified organic vegetables near the Pisgah National Forest and the city of Brevard, NC in the rich bottomland soil along the Davidson River.
Our farm model is centered around efficient production for wholesale distribution. We specialize in storage vegetables (beets, carrots, parsnips, potatoes, winter squash, sunchokes, radishes, and turnips) in the field and gourmet tomatoes in greenhouses heated by wood pellets. The farm is run by a team of three Farm Managers with the off-farm support of the farm owner. Eight seasonal H2A workers from Mexico make up the farm crew. We use scale-appropriate machinery and equipment to produce a high volume of quality produce while keeping the demands of the job reasonable. Job Description and Responsibilities You will be joining an employee-run farm with the opportunity for a long-term career. Each Farm Manager participates in and helps oversee all aspects of the crew work of the farm, including planting, hand weeding, tomato pruning and trellising, harvesting, and washing and packing. Each Farm Manager also has specific responsibilities. Each manager has multiple roles, some roles are shared between multiple managers, and roles may be re-assigned from year to year. The roles that you take on will be adapted to your experience and interest and to the needs of the farm.
This list is not exhaustive:
Operations Manager
  • The lead manager, responsible for setting the weekly schedule and daily workflow and communicating with the farm owner. Sales Manager
  • Communicates with customers through email, phone, and text to sell product, and oversees the packing, invoicing, and delivery of orders. Supplies and Inventory Manager
  • Checks inventory regularly and re-orders supplies that the farm uses throughout the season. Field Manager
  • Oversees the tractor work for preparing fields for planting and is responsible for observing field and crop needs (flame weeding, tractor cultivation, hand weeding, spraying, etc.) and for projecting harvest readiness. Crew Leader
  • The person in the field with the work crew who's in charge of quality control and efficiency, making sure everyone has the tools they need, filling out the record sheets, and transitioning the crew to the next tasks. Propagation Manager
  • Oversees transplant production in trays for lettuce and tomato plants in the spring. Tomato Production Manager
  • Oversees the planting, pruning, trellising, and harvesting of tomatoes in the greenhouses. Monitors the status of the plants, scouts for pests and disease, and manages irrigation, fertigation, spraying, and tissue sampling. Maintenance Manager
  • Oversees routine maintenance and repairs for the farm's equipment and infrastructure.
Housing Rental housing is available in the surrounding community. We can help locate reasonably priced housing nearby and cover at least part of the cost as part of the terms of employment. We have long-term plans to add housing to the farm; an interested long-term employee could be part of the planning of that. Long-Term Opportunities There are opportunities for ambitious long-term employees to expand our business model beyond wholesale vegetables. Our land and infrastructure are favorable for a wide range of produce and flowers and the greater Asheville area offers ample opportunities for direct-to-consumer sales. We have about ¾ acre of established berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries) that are currently leased out but will come under our management in the next 5 years. We would begin a discussion of this kind of arrangement in year 2 or 3 of your employment at the farm. Qualifications
  • Experience working on a commercial vegetable farm.
  • Spanish language skills are highly valued.
  • Strong communication skills, a positive attitude, and a solution-oriented outlook.
  • Self-directed while also able to follow directions.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
