JOB SUMMARY
The Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Tribal Government is seeking an experienced and dynamic Research Center Director to lead our Bering Sea Research Center (BSRC) on St. Paul Island, Alaska. In this executive role, the BSRC Director will carry out and manage the BSRC's strategic plan and research agenda, oversee its day-to-day scientific and administrative operations, and secure critical funding to ensure long-term sustainability. The ideal candidate is an established scholar or industry expert with a proven track record of securing grants and private funding, building partnerships, managing multidisciplinary teams, and translating complex research into actionable real-world impact. The BSRC reports to the ACSPI Tribal Government Executive Team, collaborates with the ACSPI Development Director and BSRC Science Support Officer, and works closely with the Bering Sea Campus team.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS
The following are essential job responsibilities and functions the position: 1. Strategic Leadership & Vision Manage BSRC's strategic plan and research agenda to ensure alignment with ACSPI Tribal Government priorities with institutional milestones and industry trends. Establish short- and long-term milestones for scientific discovery, technology implementation, community and external outreach, and partnership building. Cultivate a highly collaborative environment that encourages diverse, cross-disciplinary, and innovative research frameworks. 2. Financial Management & Funding Acquisition Diversify funding streams by aggressively pursuing federal grants, corporate and private funding, and philanthropic donations. Formulate, monitor, and obtain approval of annual center budgets , ensuring strict allocation of resources and fiscal compliance. Oversee complex grant management workflows , including progress tracking, financial reporting, and renewal submissions. 3. Operations & Team Management Closely and cooperatively work with researchers, project managers, and operational staff. Ensure all research activities comply with Tribal Government and BSRC policies, federal regulations, human/animal subject safety guidelines, and legal frameworks. Optimize workspace resources , managing high-tech laboratory infrastructure, equipment, and core facilities. 4. Dissemination & External Partnerships Serve as the primary public ambassador for BSRC, building strong partnerships with universities, government agencies, private corporations, and non-profits. Collaborate closely with the Executive Team to market the BSRC's achievements via social media, public briefings, and media relations. 5. Ability to Travel Must be able to spend significant time on St. Paul Island, especially during the summer monthswhen the majority of scientific research is occurring.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Ph.D., M.D., in science or business, or equivalent terminal degree in a scientific field directly relevant to the BSRC's core focus areas
Experience:
7+ years of progressively responsible professional experience in a university research lab, independent think tank, or corporate R D division; advanced business acumen, ideally supported by an MBA or formal training in research center administration.
Leadership:
Minimum 3-5 years of direct managerial experience supervising multi-layered scientific, technical, or administrative personnel.
Funding Record:
Proven history of successfully securing and managing large-scale, million-dollar funding portfolios.
Networks and active relationships:
Existing relationships with major local, national, and international funding bodies or industry leaders.
Compliance Knowledge:
Expert understanding of regulatory compliance, institutional review boards (IRB), data management standards, and intellectual property management.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is a salaried position ranging from $100,000 - $130,000/annually, depending on education, experience, and skills. Benefits include" Paid Time Off (Starting at 6 hours per pay period/156 hours per year); 18 Paid Holidays, Health Benefits; 401K; Employee Education Assistance.
