Job Summary:
EAS is looking for a Fisheries Science Aid II to assist with a study to monitor juvenile salmonid outmigration through USACE dams using rotary screw traps. Crew members will be required to assist on other EAS projects, as needed. Housing is not provided, but the pay range is $21HR
  • 24HR. plus $5.09 in health and welfare dollars. Per diem will be provided during overnight field sampling. A typical day for the Fisheries Science Aid will consist of the following:
  • Work collaboratively in teams to conduct fieldwork, generally within a 40-hour workweek, but some overtime may occasionally be required to meet project goals.
  • Travelling highways, single lane roads, and forest roads in various driving conditions.
  • Navigating unimproved shoreline areas by foot.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information effectively.
  • Identifying, sampling, tagging, and accurately recording relevant data for native and non-native fish species in Oregon, with an emphasis on salmonid species.
  • Conducting routine maintenance of rotary screw traps, vehicles, and sampling gear.
Desired Qualifications:
  • ~1 year of experience in the fisheries field preferred.
  • Graduated or currently enrolled in a university with a focus on fish and wildlife, biology, or ecology.
  • Experience providing technical support related to production, research, operations or program administration efforts in laboratories, field, or other settings.
  • Experience identifying and sampling native and nonnative fish species in the PNW, with an emphasis on salmonid species.
  • Repairing and troubleshooting field gear (mechanical experience a plus).
  • Experience in fish surveys and sampling techniques.
  • Experience operating kayaks or inflatable boats (kayak/raft) in moving water.
Required Qualifications:
  • Availability for overnight travel/camping, as needed, between July and October in Oregon.
  • Ability to work 10+ hour days in diverse outdoor environments, including forests, rivers, streams, and lakes, often in remote locations.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather, such as rain, fog, or extreme temperatures, including ability to drive in such conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and traverse uneven terrain.
  • Must be a proficient swimmer and able to operate in cold water conditions.
  • Ability and willingness to adjust work locations, sampling methods, and schedules (including weekends and evenings) based on project priorities.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
This position will require spending most of the time outdoors during the work shift in variable weather conditions and sometimes remote locations, at day or night. Fisheries Science Aids will work in streams with uneven and slippery surfaces, on or near moving water, may have to wade to certain traps, and/or use boats to gain access to a trap.
