Job Description

Stoney Creek Fisheries is a commercial retail operation that sells gamefish for pond & lake stockings, forage fish (minnows), and ornamentals (koi and goldfish). The SCF retail store sells fish, fish feeds, chemicals, and a large variety of pond supply products. Our wholesale division, Easy Pro Pond Products, is one of the largest vendors of water features and related equipment in the world.
FISH FARM
Associate (full-time)
BASIC INFORMATION & REQUIREMENTS
1) Assist the Manager of the SCF Fisheries Division with all aspects of daily operation. 2) Must be able to oversee the operation in the absence of the manager. 3)
Minimum Requirements:
a. High school diploma and the ability to learn quickly. b. Good basic math and computer skills. c. The ability to work around and in water; ability to handle fish. 4)
Preferred Requirements:
a. Education and/or experience with fish culture, fish handling, ponds and pond maintenance, water chemistry, weed control, fish hauling, etc. b. Understanding of computer spreadsheets and accounting software. c. Experience handling cash, checks, and credit cards. d. Michigan Chauffeur's License current bi-annual med-card. Willing & able to get this. 5) Mechanical skills are an asset: general construction, power tools, electricity, plumbing, etc. 6) All Stoney Creek store/farm positions require working outside in all types of weather and temperatures; in ponds (water); and handling fish (live and dead). 7) Employees supply their own cold/wet weather wear, rain gear and boots. 8) Weekly work hours can be highly variable. Full time employees, depending on time of year and position, may work 40 to 60+ hours per week in the short Peak Seasons. Overtime is paid after 40 hours. 9) Seasonal work responsibilities are highly variable, ranging from technical to menial. We work hard. 10) Workdays are 8 hours. Fish Deliveries are typically usually 10-12 hour days. 11) All farm employees work Saturdays during the busy season in the spring. Mid-April through June is our busiest season. Late September through November are also busy times.
NOTE:
Only the Fisheries Division Manager is full-time year-round. Fish Farm Associates can expect a a few months of work in the warehouse during the winter.
FISH & POND DUTIES
1)
Fish Harvests:
a. Efficient seining, counting, and transfer of fish. b. Pond to truck, pond to tank, and pond to pond. 2)
Fish Deliveries:
a. Hauling state-wide throughout lower Michigan. b. Stoney Creek has 2 fish hauling trucks (one 28,000 lb axle-rated truck with standard transmission & one quad box that is pulled on a trailer). c. Deliver to 4 to 7 customers during a one day delivery in a timely fashion. d. Knowledge and operation of the oxygen system to keep fish alive during transport. e. Involves 10 to 16 hour days. 3)
Fish & Pond Health:
a. Basic pond water chemistry monitoring. b. Aquatic weed control via chemical application. 4) Bird depredation (control of fish-eating birds; permitted). 5) Fish feeding and feed management.
PONDS & GROUNDS
: 1) Stoney Creek is a retail destination and display showplace … the grounds are maintained as nice as possible. 2) All farm employees are involved with maintenance on the grounds, water gardens, and water features. 3) Useful General Knowledge a. Vehicle and equipment maintenance (oil changes; filters; lubes). b. Plumbing (PVC, copper, flex-hose; etc.). c. Forklift use (employees are certified in-house). d. Construction skills; carpentry, welding, electrical.
RETAIL STORE
: 1) The ability to work in a retail environment on a one-on-one basis with customers. 2) Assist customers with fish stocking choices (species, numbers, predator/prey ratios). 3) Assist customers with aquatic weed ID and control, fish stocking recommendations, water garden maintenance, etc. 4) Must be able to learn the basics of water gardening, water features, fountains, etc. 5) Master simple cash, check, and credit card sales transactions with Traverse Accounting software. 6) Daily customer sales, order processing, invoicing, creating quotes, etc. 7)
Store Maintenance:
Product inventory maintenance; restocking shelves. 8) Store, shop, and warehouse cleaning.
Pay:
$17.00 - $21.00 per hour
