The Northwest Portland Hostel is an independent, locally owned business. The hostel staff reports directly to the Hostel Operations Manager who provides support and straight-forward guidance. About Northwest Portland Hostel & Café The Northwest Portland International Hostel offers low-cost, short-term lodging for up to 240 travelers from around the world in dorms and private rooms. The Hostel Cafe provides a down-to-earth space for travelers and locals to intermingle, with scratch made, classic American food. We are open from early morning to late night, and host events, such as live folk music, community dinners, and tap tastings. We are committed to offering a safe and welcoming space for all with opportunities to meet and intermingle. Job Responsibilities (including but not limited to): Hostel Operations Welcome, register, orient and supervise guests Take individual reservations by telephone, e-mail and through online systems Collect and accurately record overnight fees, sales of goods, etc. Provide information about the hostel and the local area to hostel guests Promote and support special events and hostel guest events Housekeeping duties including the daily cleaning of the hostel Maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for our guests Maintain a friendly demeanor and represent our hostel in a positive manner to guests, café customers, and the general public Work honorably and efficiently without constant direct supervision Follow guidelines for sustainable practices Other duties as assigned by the Hostel Management Team Requirements Understanding of and enthusiasm for the hostel's mission and values Exceptional customer service skills, ability to relate to and engage with a diverse range of people, and exercise cultural competence and inclusion Hosteling experience preferred (as a traveler) Relevant work experience The ability and eagerness to learn new software quickly (Cloudbeds) Positive attitude and willingness to be a contributing member of a team, while remaining flexible to changes in the work environment Excellent oral, communication and organizational skills Experience handling cash and recording sales transactions preferred Accurate, neat and thorough record keeping Attention to detail Demonstrated ability to work effectively without immediate supervision Adaptability and willingness to do a variety of tasks including housekeeping Conflict resolution skills and ability to act effectively in a crisis Ability to juggle multiple tasks, troubleshoot, and work gracefully under pressure Reasonable availability, including weekends Overnight on-call three times per week Requires the ability to lift 50 pounds from floor level Commitment to sustainable and environmentally conscious practices Benefits Employee discount Flexible schedule Paid time off Paid training Schedule Weekend Availability (at least Fri or Sat evening).
