A Food or Agricultural Inspector inspects food, processed food and food containers to be sure they are safe for consumers, or inspects animals, animal feed or crops to check for disease that could affect food supplies. Checks for compliance with private industry standards or federal food safety and agricultural regulations.

This position manually determines extraneous matter in cotton samples in a timely and accurate way in a production environment. The work is performed under conditions where lint and dust are present. Work requires mental activity and finger dexterity, standing for long periods of time and working effectively with others. Qualified applicants must provide proof of high school diploma or GED Experience requirement: 520 hours of experience as a Cotton & Tobacco Program seasonal employee with a performance rating of 3.00 or higher with no rating of "Does Not Meet" for any single performance element; OR Successful completion of two or more years in an accredited college or university with proof of an overall grade point average of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 point scale; OR Six months of experience as a cotton classer in determining cotton quality characteristics; OR Six months of experience as a cotton buyer or seller engaged in the marketing of cotton for a gin, merchant, cooperative, or mill; OR Six months of experience in grading any type of agricultural products for a state or the federal government; OR Six months of experience in the management of growing or marketing cotton; OR Six months of experience as a computer programmer or operator; OR Six months of clerical experience as a bank teller, bookkeeper, tax clerk, or secretary; OR Six months of experience in a trade requiring special training or license such as welder, electrician, plumber, auto mechanic, licensed practical nurse, medical lab technician, etc., OR successful completion of training at a vocational technical school. Proof of special training or license required. Applicants must pass a physical exam (USDA will provide location and payment).Training begins 09/14/2026 and ends 10/06/2026. Trainees who pass the course will be hired as seasonal cotton classers. Must be able to work any shift. Weekend and Holiday work is required. Background checks will be conducted on all applicants; selected applicants must pass a background check and a physical exam before training. All applicants must be U. S. Citizens; and must be prepared to show a valid REAL ID and Social Security Card. Veteran's preference will be applied as appropriate. A copy of the applicant's DD-214 must be provided to qualify for veteran's preference.
