Job Description

Position Description:
Conservation/Forestry Technician N elson Land Management conducts its work in the most ecologically important areas of Illinois and along side professionals in the field from entities such as IL Department of Natural Resources, US Fish & Wildlife Service, and local conservation groups. In exchange for your hard work at NLM you will:
Learn Skills:
Native plant identification; Prescribed burning; Chainsaw use and maintenance; and Invasive species control
Attain Certifications:
Basic Wildland Firefighting Pesticide Applicator/Operator First Aid/CPR Headquarters:

S State Street, Greenview, IL Pay:
$18-$20/hour depending on experience
Benefits:
Upon Hire:

Forty hours paid personal time-off:
Accrued at 1 hour per 40 hours worked.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Vegetation Management:
Brush clearing, herbicide application, prescribed burning at state parks, nature preserves, and habitat restoration project sites.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • HS Diploma.
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather;
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; chainsaw, brush saw, UTV, water pumps, herbicide sprayers, etc.);
  • Possess, or ability to obtain, related licenses such as first aid, CPR, basic wildland firefighter 130/190 etc. (provided by NLM, if needed)
  • Possess, or ability to obtain possession of, IL Department of Agriculture Commercial Pesticide Operator's license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree or one or more years of experience in natural resources related field
REQUIRED
  • Personal pair of steel toe boots
  • Leather gloves
  • All other personal protective equipment supplied by employer: i.
e. disposable ear plugs, chainsaw chaps, hard hat, etc
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
The candidate may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
These conditions require:
  • considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • 8 -10 hour days in isolated settings
  • occasional overnight stays in hotels
  • ability to tolerate insects, poison ivy, and other unpleasant aspects of nature
