Job Description

Forestry Technician 1 State of New York - Environmental Conservation, Department of 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12207 $19.33 an hour - Full-time $19.33 an hour - Full-time The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Preferred Candidates will have experience and interest in working with geographic information systems software, specifically ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online. They should be proficient in working with vector and raster data, reviewing and editing attribute tables, and use of basic spatial analysis tools. Candidates would be knowledgeable in using AGOL applications such as Field Maps, Survey123, and Experience Builder. Candidates should be well versed in Microsoft programs such as Excel and PowerPoint. Candidates may engage with the public through programs offered by the Division of Lands and Forests. Candidates should demonstrate experience with public communication and creating written learning materials. While this position is an office-based position, individuals may be assigned to assist regional field staff with offsite responsibilities. Preferred candidates should be comfortable working in outdoor conditions. Duties Description
  • The primary responsibility of this position will be assisting the department roll out the new 480a Geospatial Data Submission Tool. Applicants would be helping with processing and management of geospatial data relating to the 480a Forest Tax Law program.
  • Collate regional information from the 480a program and assist in creating a central database.
  • Assist in the administration and development of forest management projects in the Forest Stewardship, Forest Utilization and Forest Tax Law Programs.
  • Collect, compile and organize data associated with program publications such as the semi-annual Stumpage Price Report and the annual Timber Harvest Report, reporting tools and other purposes.
  • Provide technical assistance to regional staff by maintaining handbooks and manuals related to various forest management projects and providing direct assistance through telephone and email communication.
  • Assist with the Regenerate NY cost share grant program data management and project evaluation
  • Maintain web pages and various maps associated with the Stewardship, Forest Utilization and Forest Tax Law programs.
  • Support special technical assignments as required for purposes such as tracking industry, forest land use trends, insect and disease management and tracking sales and distribution of forest products.
  • Assist other programs within the Bureau of Forest Resource Management with various projects as needed.
  • Attend various meetings, workshops and conferences.
  • Assist regional field staff with on-site technical visits.
The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: botany, dendrology, forest biology, forest ecology, forest ecosystem management, forest entomology, forest health, forest mensuration, forest pathology, forest protection, forest soils, general soils, geographic information systems, land surveying, and silviculture OR One (1) year of technical forestry experience in one (1) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests. Additional comments regarding the vacancy. Additional Comments This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 3/31/2027. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.

Must be able to work in remote areas.

Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required.

Overnight travel may be required.

Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
