Job Description

The City of Cypress is seeking a motivated and experienced Maintenance Specialist to join our Public Works team! You will play a vital role in preserving and improving our public outdoor spaces, ensuring that our community's parks, athletic fields, and landscape remain safe, clean, and beautiful for residents and visitors.

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Lay out the work and instruct crew members in safe and effective methods and use of equipment and tools in park and landscape maintenance. Maintain park and landscape areas. Identify, treat, and prevent plant/tree diseases. Lay out, design, and install sprinkler irrigation systems, both manual and automatic. Trouble-shoot and repair damaged controllers, controller wires and broken irrigation lines and sprinkler heads. Safely load and unload supplies, materials and equipment. Perform heavy and light manual labor using a variety of common tools and equipment. Requisition materials and equipment. Train subordinates. Accurately complete work reports. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
Specialized methods, equipment, materials and work practices of parks and landscape maintenance activities, including proper irrigation design and repair. Treatment and prevention of ornamental tree and plant diseases. Methods, supplies and tools used in planting, cultivating and caring for lawns, trees and shrubs. Basics of supervision and training. Blueprint reading and interpretation. Safety precautions and practices, including the use of personal protective equipment necessary in working with hand tools and public works equipment. Safe driving practices and State and local laws pertaining to the operation of assigned commercial and other motor vehicles on streets and roads.
Ability to:
Organize, supervise, train, and perform work of a maintenance crew in parks and landscape maintenance requiring specialized skill and knowledge. Read and interpret safety labels, related technical manuals and work instructions. Work well independently and under immediate supervision. Safely operate and use power-driven and motorized equipment and hand tools. Drive a commercial motor vehicle or other assigned vehicle in accordance with law and appropriate safety precautions. Safely lift, carry, or relocate objects and materials weighing sixty (60) pounds. Interpret work plans. Follow, adhere and advise subordinates on all safety regulations, including the appropriate use of all personal protective equipment. Work in inclement weather conditions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties.
Experience and Education :
Any combination of education and/or experience that would provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory performance.
A typical combination is:
Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in a lead capacity in related parks and landscape maintenance work, preferably in the municipal public works field, and a high school diploma or G.E.D.
License/Certification:
Due to the performance of field duties, an incumbent in this position may be required to operate a City vehicle which will require possession and maintenance of a valid California commercial driver's license (Class B) within six (6) months of hire, including maintaining an acceptable driving record during the course of employment. This position may be subject to the Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) testing policy for alcohol and controlled substances if the incumbent holds a commercial driver's license and operates commercial motor vehicles or Street Sweeper vehicles in a safety sensitive position.
