Job Description

Golf Course Superintendent Position Summary The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the overall operation, maintenance, and management of the City of Mt. Vernon Golf Course, a municipal 9-hole facility. This position ensures high-quality playing conditions, efficient operations, and responsible stewardship of City resources. The Superintendent provides leadership and direction to maintenance staff, oversees turf and grounds care, manages budgets, and plans both daily operations and long-term improvements to the course. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring technical expertise, strong work ethic, and the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays during peak season. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Course Maintenance & Operations Plan, organize, and execute all maintenance activities for greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and surrounding grounds Maintain optimal turf health through mowing, fertilization, aeration, pest control, and irrigation management Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot irrigation systems to ensure efficient water usage Monitor course conditions daily and adjust maintenance practices based on weather and play schedules Ensure course is prepared for daily play, tournaments, and special event Staff Supervision Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise maintenance staff and seasonal employees Assign daily tasks and ensure work is completed safely and efficiently Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, and accountability Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing training Budgeting & Administration Prepare and manage annual operating and capital improvement budgets Monitor expenditures and ensure cost-effective use of materials, labor, and equipment Maintain accurate records for chemicals, fertilizers, equipment, and payroll Assist with long-range planning and course improvement projects Equipment & Facilities Management Oversee maintenance, repair, and replacement of all golf course equipment Ensure maintenance facility, cart storage, and related areas are organized and safe Coordinate with vendors and contractors for specialized services Compliance & Environmental Stewardship Apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations Maintain required licenses and documentation Implement environmentally responsible practices related to water usage, chemical application, and sustainability Customer Service & Coordination Coordinate maintenance schedules with golf operations staff to minimize disruption to play Respond to golfer concerns and ensure a positive playing experience Work collaboratively with City staff and leadership to support overall facility success Minimum Qualifications Education & Experience Associate's degree or certification in Turf Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field preferred Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in golf course maintenance, including supervisory experience Experience at a municipal or 9-hole course strongly preferred Licenses & Certifications Valid driver's license Pesticide Applicator License (or ability to obtain within 6 months) Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of turfgrass management, irrigation systems, and equipment operation Ability to manage budgets and control costs Leadership and team management skills Knowledge of safety practices and regulatory compliance Ability to work independently and make sound decisions Strong communication and organizational skills Working Conditions Work is performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions Requires physical labor including lifting, bending, and operating machinery Regular early mornings, weekends, and holiday work required during peak season Position may be designated as safety-sensitive Compensation & Benefits Salary range: $55,000-$60,000 depending on Qualifications Full-time benefits may include health insurance, retirement, paid leave, and other City benefits Interested individuals may send a resume to the Mount Vernon City Clerk's Office at P.O.
