Description Responsible for the maintenance and repairs of all zoo buildings, equipment, exhibits, water features and grounds; prepares zoo grounds for opening each day; and plays a key role in the training and supervision of seasonal intern and volunteers. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

Prepare zoo grounds for opening daily, including blowing off sidewalks, picking up trash, emptying trash receptacles, and using power washer as needed. Make repairs to walkways as needed, expansion foam and caulking on concrete walkways and replace boards as needed on elevated deck and walkways. Perform construction and repair work for new and existing zoo buildings and exhibits as necessary. Coordinate with contractors for repairs and projects when necessary; obtain quotes for materials, labor and construction when necessary, observing City's established procurement policies and procedures. Effectively schedule, meet and supervise contractors when they are on-site. Document all repairs, whether done in-house or contracted, in digital database and in "life folder" of all vehicles and equipment. Maintain landscaping and horticulture of zoo grounds as needed, including mowing, weed-eating, and use tractor, chainsaw and other equipment. Maintain organization of shop areas, tool shed and chemical shed. Create and maintain standardized SOPs for all equipment (pumps, AC's, generators, etc.). Work with General Services Department to decommission equipment and prepare for city auction. Work with General services Department to properly dispose of paints and chemicals. Work all special events. Expect to work and not request time off during the months of March through July and September through October. Maintain established pest control program.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Best Customer Service Practices. Safety procedures for working with wild animals. Imperial Standard and Metric measurement systems.

Ability to:

Call and effectively communicate with contractors to get quotes for materials and labor. Use previous experience and knowledge in expansion and construction of new exhibits. Apply safe work practices, utilizing provided safety equipment. Apply principals of Lean Six Sigma. Maintain horticulture as needed. Deliver excellent customer service. Set a good example for rest of staff. Be focused on assigned duties from start of shift, throughout shift to the end of the shift. Work around wild and dangerous animals in a safe and competent manner. Follow establish practices and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy zoo environment for the animals, personnel and visitors. Perform work in adverse weather conditions. Professionally respond to requests and inquiries from the general public. Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work in a team environment. Work on uneven ground. Maintain a safe work environment for yourself and others. Have a yearly TB test and stay current on the Tetanus vaccine. Work in rapidly changing environment. Communicate effectively with members of the public and other members of the staff. Exhibit good time management and organizational skills. Organize time and volunteers effectively. Manage a variety of personalities in a small staff, teamwork setting. Meet deadlines. Prepare, manage and stay within a budget

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Experience:

Minimum of five (5) years prior experience working construction projects and landscaping. Previous experience working around wild animals desired. Proven ability to provide excellent customer service. License(s)/Certification(s): Possession of a valid driver's license. Negative TB test. Physical Demands and Work Environment
