Director of Stadium Operations About Long Beach Coast Baseball Long Beach Coast Baseball ("LBC") is an independent professional baseball team playing at historic Blair Field in Long Beach, California. We believe in the magic of baseball as a force for good, and we are committed to delivering a first class playing surface and gameday experience for our players, fans, and community. About the Role LBC is seeking a Grounds Crew Assistant to support the preparation, maintenance, and upkeep of Blair Field before, during, and after games. This person will work directly under the Director of Stadium Operations and the grounds crew lead to make sure the field is safe, playable, and presentable for every game and event. This role is hands-on and physical, requiring early arrivals, late finishes, and the ability to work efficiently as part of a small team under time pressure. No two days are exactly the same, and the work shifts depending on weather, schedule changes, and what the field needs that day. Key Responsibilities Before Games Assist with mound and home plate maintenance, including moisture control, tamping, and clay repair. Mow, edge, and groom the outfield and infield grass to game ready standards. Drag, rake, and groom the infield skin, and apply conditioner as needed. Paint and chalk batter's boxes, foul lines, coaches boxes, and field markings. Set up and secure bases, the pitching rubber, and field equipment. Check and adjust the irrigation system and tarp as weather requires. Inspect the warning track, fencing, and playing surface for hazards or repairs needed. Help stage grounds equipment, tools, and supplies for quick access during the game. During Games Stay on call for mid-inning and between-inning field touch ups, including mound and plate maintenance. Respond quickly to weather changes, including tarp deployment if needed. Monitor field conditions and flag any safety concerns to the grounds crew lead or stadium operations. Assist with rain delay procedures and field protection as directed. Support any on field needs tied to between inning promotions or activations that affect the playing surface. After Games Break down and store bases, the pitching rubber, and field equipment. Repair cleat marks, divots, and wear patterns on the mound, plate area, and base paths. Water and groom the infield as needed to prepare for the next use. Remove tarps, covers, and any temporary field equipment. Walk the field to check for leftover equipment, debris, or damage. Help secure tools, chemicals, and grounds equipment in storage areas. Report any equipment issues, field damage, or maintenance needs to the grounds crew lead. What Success Looks Like The Grounds Crew Assistant will be successful if Blair Field is consistently safe, playable, and well presented for every game, the grounds crew lead has reliable support before, during, and after games, and field related issues are caught and addressed quickly rather than becoming bigger problems.
Qualifications Required:
3+ months of experience in groundskeeping preferred, turf maintenance, landscaping, or sports field upkeep, or a strong willingness to learn. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods. Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment and materials up to 50 pounds. Comfortable with physical, hands-on work including kneeling, bending, and repetitive motion. Availability for early mornings, evenings, weekends, and home game days, with a flexible schedule around the LBC home schedule. Reliable, punctual, and able to follow direction in a fast-paced environment. Willingness to learn proper techniques for mound work, infield grooming, and field painting. Preferred Prior experience with groundskeeping, turf maintenance, or sports field upkeep. Experience working at a baseball or softball facility at any level. Basic familiarity with irrigation systems, mowers, and grounds equipment. Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate takes pride in the way a field looks and plays, and understands that the little details, a clean chalk line, a properly tamped mound, a smooth infield, make a real difference for players and fans. They are dependable, work well as part of a small crew, and do not mind early mornings, long days, or getting their hands dirty to get the job done right. Equal Opportunity Employer We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, gender identity, marital or veteran status, or any other protected class.
