Job Description

CLASS TITLE
GROUNDS
EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
(Range 20)
BASIC FUNCTION
Under direction of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment utilized in mowing and trimming grass, moving dirt and transporting materials and equipment.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Operate tractor with ground mower attachments and a tractor with blade disc, and other grounds equipment in weeding, digging, and harrowing grounds. Operate skip loaders in picking up trash, rocks, sand and dirt, and loading trucks. Perform skilled heavy tree trimming and removal activities, prune, plant, repair, spray and care for trees and shrubs, and operate a truck with hydraulic boom attachment for trees at high elevations. Perform routine maintenance on mowers and related equipment; inspect, adjust, lubricate, and clean equipment. Perform grounds keeping duties as assigned. Trim, shape and prune a wide variety of trees; climb trees using hooks, ropes, cables, and aerial tower. Perform gopher/small-rodent abatement using chemicals, traps and specialized machinery. Clean roof drains/downspouts and gutters. Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Operation, use, and routine maintenance of power grounds equipment. Methods, materials, supplies, tools, and equipment used in gardening and grounds maintenance work. Materials, equipment and methods used in tree trimming. Technical aspects of field of specialty. Health and safety regulations. District organization, operations, policies and objectives.
ABILITY TO
Operate and service power equipment. Perform general gardening, grounds, and custodial work. Perform abatement procedures of gopher/small rodents and operate specialized equipment. Perform skilled work in tree trimming activities. Operate the appropriate motor vehicle or equipment. Follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain effective relationships with others. Climb trees at heights safely.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and three years experience in the operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance equipment including large gang mowers and related equipment.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid California Driver's License.
WORKING CONDITIONS
ENVIRONMENT:
Outdoor environment. Adverse weather conditions. Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Lifting heavy objects to load into trucks. Perform heavy physical labor. Dexterity of hands, wrists and fingers to operate various grounds maintenance equipment and vehicles. Seeing to inspect and clean equipment and perform work. Carrying, pushing and pulling. Bending at the waist.
HAZARDS:
Fumes from vehicle and equipment operation.
Pay:
$26.06 - $31.68 per hour
