NE06 Position Summary This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the work of a crew of personnel engaged in the maintenance and repairs of campus grounds, landscaping, equipment and roadway areas in coordination with the Grounds Supervisor.
MAJOR DUTIES
Participates in and oversees completion of weekly and daily work assignments for crew members and keeps crew on track as requested by the Supervisor. Inspects and monitors irrigation system, turf areas, trees and shrubs for maintenance and repair needs. Obtains a Public Pesticide applicators license through the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and maintains the license throughout employment. Assists and completes work orders as assigned by the supervisor. Calculates amounts and applies pesticides and herbicides. Programs, monitors and inspects irrigation systems; repairs irrigation system as needed. Operates grounds maintenance and snow removal equipment as needed. Oversees and participates in snow and ice removal during regular operation hours and if needed after hours. Supervises equipment usage and maintenance; coordinates and performs repairs as needed. Weeds, mulches, fertilizes, sprays (pesticides/herbicides), mows and trims lawns; rakes leaves; operates mowers and string trimmers to trim and edge grounds. Performs greenhouse duties; plants seeds and transplants seedlings; and performs other greenhouse duties as required by the supervisor. Supervises and assists in the collection and removal of trash. Responds to after-hours emergencies. Assists in preparations, all post operations and clean up for special events. Trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates and disciplines personnel. Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of grounds maintenance and management principles and practices. Knowledge of grounds equipment operation, maintenance and repair principles. Knowledge of irrigation system installation, maintenance and repair principles. Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices. Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority. Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs. Skill in the operation of snow removal equipment. Skill in decision making and problem solving. Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in working effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Grounds Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include equipment operation and maintenance manuals, safe work guidelines, and college policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related supervisory and grounds maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the work of a crew of personnel engaged in the maintenance of campus grounds. Success in this position contributes to the provision of a safe and well-maintained environment for college operations.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, contractors, vendors, and members of the general public. Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, or to motivate or influence persons.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel, seasonal workers, and student workers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of New Mexico for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. The following
