Seasonal Gardener

Seasonal Gardener Newton Cemetery & Arboretum is seeking a seasonal worker to join the Greenhouse Department from late March until September 1st (with the possibility of season extension until early October). An active cemetery since 1855 and accredited arboretum since 2014, Newton Cemetery & Arboretum is a private, non-profit organization serving the needs of all faiths for Newton and the Boston Area. We strive to maintain a serene and attractive park-like atmosphere. The Seasonal Gardener, under the direction of the Greenhouse Manager, Assistant Manager, or other assigned supervisor, uses best practices to grow, plant, and maintain the annual and perennial plant material used on Newton Cemetery grounds and landscapes. Essential Duties of the

Seasonal Gardener:

• Maintain Cemetery flower and groundcover beds to meet Cemetery standards.
• Assist in aspects of growing plants for Cemetery grounds and customers.
• Follow instructions while carrying out tasks. Tasks include but are not limited to: weeding, watering, planting, transplanting, preparing garden beds, potting.
• Assist in implementing integrated pest management strategies.
• Clean and maintain greenhouse facility and equipment.
• Follow safety policies and promote positive safety culture.
• Work in tandem with other departments to coordinate landscaping projects on an occasional basis.

Qualified Applicants Must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Have a valid drivers license and reliable transportation (applicants are welcome to take public transportation to and from work, license required for the operation of work vehicles on Cemetery Grounds)
• Be able to work independently and efficiently
• Be dependable and punctual
• Be able to stick with repetitive tasks (weeding, planting, potting, etc.)
• Be able to perform a physically demanding job in various weather conditions No greenhouse experience necessary.

An applicant with landscaping, gardening, farm, or barn experience will have an idea of the type of physical labor this position requires. Newton Cemetery is located 1 mile from the Newton Highlands Station, accessible via Green Line 9 (D).
