Job Description

Under general supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, the individual in this position performs work in the care and maintenance of the campus, including lawn, trees, and shrubs, recycling, trash and general site upkeep. The person in this position needs general knowledge of landscape and site maintenance, irrigation systems, and landscape installation and will operate a wide variety of specialized grounds maintenance, construction, road maintenance and snow removal equipment. Duties and Responsibilities Under general supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, the individual in this position provides landscape and site services operating a wide variety of specialized grounds maintenance, construction, road maintenance and snow removal equipment. Duties include but are not limited to: turf management; tree and shrub maintenance and installation; trash and recycling collection, hauling, and disposal; street and sidewalk maintenance; landscape design and construction; greenhouse production; flowerbed design and maintenance; irrigation system design, installation and maintenance; street, sidewalk, and entryway snow removal and alleviation of icy hazards; outdoor environmental safety; weed and outside pest control; equipment repair and maintenance; maintaining and producing landscape inventories and other detailed records; and other duties as assigned. The work schedule is typically 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, but may vary greatly depending on departmental need, including MSUN event and activity support. The person in this position may be called in for work at any time, particularly during the snow season. Snow removal operations may require work most of the night with little prior warning. Weekend work will often be required. Required Qualifications
  • Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills High School Diploma or equivalent Current Montana Driver's License or ability to obtain a current Montana Driver's License within 30 days Experience in a large-scale commercial grounds , maintenance, landscape operation or a combination of relevant experience and education, which may include landscape
  • horticulture curriculum Experience operating general commercial grounds maintenance equipment Experience operating specialized landscape equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, large mowers (72" deck or larger) and other equipment Experience and skill maintaining small engine machinery and performing incidental and emergency repairs on grounds maintenance equipment Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Experience in recycling/refuse collection and recordkeeping Demonstrated competence using personal computers and software, such as word processing, electronic calendars, and email Have (or have the ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License (Class B, Type II with air brake endorsement) and have and maintain an acceptable driving record The Successful Candidate Will Perform the duties and meet the work schedule listed of the vacancy announcement Communicate effectively with employees and the public both in person and over the phone Successfully interact with diverse groups of people, both internal and external to the organization Establish and maintain effective working relations with coworkers and the public Work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team Represent Facilities Services to others in a professional and courteous manner Special Requirements Physical Demands The ability to satisfactorily fulfill the duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including but not limited to the follwoing: application of herbicides and pesticides performing physically demanding work such as shoveling post-pounding personally moving objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
