Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in performing assigned duties. Employee must also exercise tact and courtesy in contact with various school officials. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Grounds Manager. Qualification Requirements High school diploma or GED required, courses in irrigation design and turfgrass management preferred. Hold or obtain North Carolina Class A CDL within 12 months of employment. Must maintain a safe driving record. Possess valid pesticide license upon employment. Experience in operation and maintenance of grounds equipment: tractors; loaders; dump trucks; back hoe; skid steer; dingos; and small engine equipment such as hedge trimmers, chain saws, blowers, pressure washers, etc. General knowledge of grounds maintenance and operations: irrigation systems, athletic field, turf maintenance, herbicides and pesticides, fence installation/repair, concrete and asphalt repair, pruning and trimming shrubs and trees. General knowledge of safety precautions applicable to grounds maintenance. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work in extreme climate conditions. Ability to work without full time supervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. Some knowledge of computers and electronic devices. Experience in irrigation system maintenance and installation and turfgrass management preferred. Salary Pay Grade NC04 Reports to Grounds Manager Essential Functions Repairs and maintains irrigation systems. Provides limited turfgrass management training to miscellaneous CCS Staff. Operates and maintains tractors, bush hog, backhoe, bobcat, chipper, dump truck and other equipment. Sprays pesticides, fertilizes, and aerates ball fields, installs sod, grass seed and straw. Maintains the grass, shrubbery, trees, walkways, steps and retaining walls of all school properties. Maintains and installs signs. Assist with maintenance of stormwater retention ponds. Cleans storm drains and picks up trash. Repairs fencing, concrete and asphalt. Provides limited training to other grounds keeping personnel in grounds keeping functions and equipment operation. Performs snow and ice removal. Performs related work as required. Physical Requirements Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including backhoes, bobcats, graders, weed eaters, edgers, blowers, hedge clippers, chain saws, shovels, rakes, etc. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 150 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic). Work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to vibration. Physical demand requirements are those for Medium Work.
