GROUNDS MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN
General Statement of Duties Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance of county grounds, landscaped areas, and exterior facilities. Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class performs a variety of routine groundskeeping and landscape maintenance duties to ensure the cleanliness, safety, and aesthetic appeal of County properties. Work includes mowing, trimming, planting, general landscaping, litter removal, and minor repairs to grounds equipment. Duties are typically performed independently or as part of a small crew and are subject to seasonal demands and weather conditions. The employee must exercise judgment and initiative in performing assigned tasks and ensuring proper care of public outdoor spaces. The work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated through observation and feedback on grounds condition and task completion. Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Tasks Mows lawns and trims edges using power mowers and trimmers. Plants, waters, fertilizes, prunes, and maintains flowers, trees, shrubs, and turf. Removes weeds, leaves, and litter from grounds and landscaped areas. Operates and maintains light equipment such as blowers, mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and utility vehicles. Maintains cleanliness of sidewalks, parking lots, and outdoor seating areas. Performs seasonal maintenance including leaf collection. Assists with installation or repair of fences, signage, playground equipment, and other outdoor features. Applies pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers as directed and in compliance with regulations. Reports equipment malfunctions or property damage to supervisor. Assists with special events setup and breakdown when needed. Additional Duties Performs related duties as required. Recruitment and Selection Guidelines Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of groundskeeping methods, materials, and equipment. Ability to operate and maintain hand and power tools safely. Ability to identify landscape care needs and perform appropriate tasks. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to observe safety regulations and report hazards. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public. Physical Requirements Must be able to perform the basic life functions of standing, walking, bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, grasping, hearing, and performing repetitive motions. Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds frequently. Must possess visual acuity to assess landscape needs and determine the accuracy and quality of work. Desirable Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Some experience in grounds or landscape maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Pesticide license preferred.
