Grounds Shift:

(NE S WFSE Campuswide). This individual will, under general supervision, perform skilled work in the maintenance of campus landscapes, hardscapes, natural areas, nurseries, and greenhouses. The primary function of this position will be to perform skilled tasks requiring knowledge of sustainable and organic gardening practices and ecological restoration, which includes but is not limited to the following tasks: removal of invasive species, pulling, digging up, and cutting weeds, weed-eating, equipment operation and maintenance, planting wetlands plants, monitoring and reporting maintenance tasks, blowing and/or sweeping regional trail, signage maintenance, trash picking and litter control.JOB DUTIES
Perform invasive plant and pest control Prepare sites and soils for planting Plant seeds, annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees Prune plant material Plant propagation in the field and greenhouse Maintain greenhouse and nursery plant material Apply organic fertilizers, compost tea, and soil inoculants Use a variety of hand tools such as pruning shears, rakes, shovels, hoes, pitchforks, and hand saws Operate power and motorized equipment such as line trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, mowers, pressure washers, utility vehicles, tractors, trucks, lifts, and snow equipment Clean, service, and maintain tools and equipmentHazardous Waste Clean-Up:
Sharps disposal, Chemical Spills, etc. Remove snow and ice from areas such as sidewalks, stairs, roads, ramps and parking garages and lots Apply deicer, salt, sand as required During inclement weather operate power brushes, spreaders, plow trucks, truck-mounted sanding and deicing units Install and maintain campus signs, fences, rockeries, etc. May direct the work of others Perform Traffic Control Flagging Assist with and/or perform tours of campus landscape and/or operations for Students, Faculty, Staff and the general public as required Assist with Campus Events as required Assist other Facilities Teams and/or other Campus Departments as required Perform related duties as required. In the performance of these duties, the Gardener 2 will be working outside in all sorts of weather conditions. Contact and exposure to insects, plant material, pollen, and North Creek water are routine. Rubber calf boots and hip waders are routinely worn. Waders and rubber boots, rain gear, work pants, other work outer wear and PPE are provided by the department.Minimum Requirement:
Physical ability to do required work AND one year of experience or training involving grounds maintenance, plant care, cultivation and landscape installation. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.Additional Experience:
Experience as a Gardener/Restorationist Training in botany, horticulture, ecology, forestry, or allied field Ecological restoration Plant identificationOrganic Land Care Condition of Employment:
- Valid Washington State Driver's License
- Ability to lift/move 50 pounds
- Ability to secure valid CPR, AED, and First Aid certificate within six months of hire
- Ability to secure valid Washington State Traffic Control Flagger certification within six months of hire This position is designated as one that performs an essential function.
