Position Summary:
The Spray Technician / Assistant Superintendent in Training (AIT) role supports the Golf Maintenance Department by assisting with daily operations, including irrigation operations, fertilizer applications, spray applications, course maintenance, course set up, and equipment operation while training for the Assistant Superintendent role. Works primarily as a Spray Technician. Also serves as a Team Lead by answering questions, providing resources, and encouraging growth and development of the Golf Maintenance staff. Primary area of emphasis surrounds application of fertilizers and chemicals to golf course property and daily set up of golf courses.Key Responsibilities:
Golf Maintenance Support :
Responsible to assist the Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent, Senior Superintendent and Director of Golf Maintenance in planning, organizing, and executing the daily maintenance tasks, including mowing, topdressing, irrigation, and fertilization of greens, tees, fairways, and roughs.Team Lead :
Provide guidance and leadership to the golf maintenance team, including scheduling, training, and ensuring the adherence to established standards and protocols while learning duties of Assistant Superintendent.- Serve as first point of contact (POC) for golf maintenance staff in answering questions, providing direction for daily assignments and coaching staff in skills development.
- Assist in providing guidance and leadership to the golf maintenance team, may assist in scheduling, standup meetings, training, and performance reviews and documentation.
- Serves as liaison between staff and Golf Maintenance management team to ensure all Team Member issues are addressed and resolved in a timely manner.
- Responsible for training of other team members assigned to similar tasks.
- Water in chemicals or fertilizers after application as needed.
- Hand waters greens when needed.
- Helps with irrigation repairs.
- Assist in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting for the golf course's irrigation system to ensure efficient water distribution.
Spray Technician:
Under the guidance of the Golf Course Superintendent, assist with preparation and application of fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals as needed.- Assist with implementation and monitoring of pest and disease management programs, overseeing, the application of treatments and the maintenance of healthy turf.
- Assist in record keeping and maintaining accurate records related to maintenance activities such as chemical and fertilizer applications.
- Applies chemicals and fertilizers to resort properties in correct manner.
- Calibrates application equipment. Uses hand spreaders, push spreaders, hand sprayer, riding sprayer.
- Assist in implementation of environmental responsibility practices to safeguard the natural surroundings of the golf course, landscape grounds, and maintenance shop.
Equipment Operation:
Operate and maintain various maintenance equipment, including sprayers and utility vehicles, adhering to safety protocols.- Assist with the maintenance and safe operations of the golf course maintenance equipment, ensuring their proper functionality and addressing any issues promptly.
- Ensure all staff are trained in the proper usage of all tools, and golf maintenance equipment; may serve as equipment operator and equipment operator trainer.
Additional Responsibilities:
- May assist in upholding safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a secure working environment for the golf maintenance team and our guests.
- May participate in golf course improvement projects, landscaping enhancements, and renovations as directed by the Golf Course Superintendent.
- May assist in managing the department's budget, contributing to cost control measures, and forecasting future expenses.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience
- Two-years minimum experience in golf course maintenance operations.
- Prior experience with golf course chemical and fertilizer applications required.
- Prior managerial or supervisory experience preferred, but not required. Skills
- Strong knowledge of golf course maintenance and landscaping practices, spray and chemical applications and equipment operation, and irrigation systems.
- Strong work ethic, adaptability, and the ability to solve problems independently.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for team coordination and guest interactions.
- Ability to positively coach, provide guidance, support, and assist other team members in the execution of their job duties.
- Strong active listening skills, ability to take direction, ask questions and continuously learn.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure the golf course is maintained to the highest standards.
- Strong Understanding of the basic principles of golf.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions provided in English.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions independently.
- Ability to understand immediate safety commands without hesitation.
- Strong ability to work independently with minimal supervision, follow instructions and complete assignments.
- Ability to adhere to safety protocols and procedures.
- Strong ability to operate various types of golf maintenance equipment from hand tools to all mower operations.
- Strong time management skills; ability to multi-task in a busy work environment.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Enrollment or completion of course work in turf management, horticulture, or related field is preferred, though equivalent experience and education will be considered.
- Any of the following licenses or ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire/promotion: o State of Florida Commercial Turf & Ornamental license o Golf Course Best Management Practices Certification o Green Industries Best Management Practices Certification o
Limited Commercial Fertilizer Applicator License Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a Team Member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.- Able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, bend, and / or reach repeatedly.
- Able to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds, carry, pull, and push heavy objects and materials.
- Able to be on feet and moving around for entire shift.
- Physical stamina and the ability to perform outdoor, physically demanding work.
- Subject to environmental conditions, work activities can occur inside and outside.
- Ability to see, hear, smell, and have manual dexterity to use all equipment.
